Ideas for Unique Family Traditions

Ideas for Unique Family Traditions

Change it up this year with a few new ideas, see what sticks and start a new, lasting family tradition.

Traditions have to start somewhere. Years and years ago, for holiday meals with the family, my grandma decided to make everyone go on a walk between dinner and dessert – and the tradition lives on today.

So if you’re looking to try something new this year, here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Get Crafty
Invite a few of your friends, or your children’s friends, over for a craft party. You can all make the same thing – each with their own personal flair – or you can provide a bunch of options for people to choose from. One option:

Give Thanks Garland

Materials
Printer paper
Scissors
Crayons or markers
Glue stick
Craft twine
“I am thankful for” flag printouts

  1. Print your favorite pennant patterns or print black and white ones and color in your own patterns. Click here to download them!
  2. Cut out the pennants, then gather the family and let everyone write what they’re thankful for in the blank spaces
  3. Fold the pennant shapes in half, and glue the sides together around a strand of craft twine. Hang up your garland in a common area, like over the living room mantle

2. Enjoy Festive Entertainment
Instead of just watching holiday shows on TV, attend a live production like a ballet, musical, symphony or play.

3. Plan a Date Night
Shopping with a partner can ease some of the decision-making stress. Afterward, reward yourselves with a relaxing dinner out, just the two of you.

4. Tap into Your Heritage
Add a new dish to your holiday feast. Make a traditional meal, dessert or bread that pays tribute to your grandparents or other ancestors.

5. Spread the Cheer to Everyone
Deliver goodies to local snowplow drivers, firefighters or police officers. Check with your local town hall to find out the rules for treating a public employee.

We always open a gift on Christmas Eve. Something small but meaningful. Always give at least one super special book to the kids on Christmas. For Thanksgiving, we make dinner and bring it to my grandmoms to eat with her since she can't make it out to us, and her oven cant hold everything we need.
