5 Affordable Romantic Weekend Trips

Looking for a romantic escape over a weekend? Look no further than these 5 ideas.

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Saturday this year, it’s the perfect opportunity for a romantic getaway weekend with your loved one. You don’t have to fly to Paris and have dinner atop the Eiffel Tower for a special experience. There are many possibilities that can be highly romantic and memorable, but won’t break the bank or require weeks of planning. Here are some themes for you to consider:

1. A Romantic “Big City” Getaway
Certain cities such as New York or San Francisco might be known as top destinations for Valentine’s Day, but any “big city” getaway can be a great way to leave the everyday behind and enjoy some special couple time. Big cities offer many options…from theater shows to art museums, from shopping to top-notch restaurants and bars.

Many hotels, large or small, offer special Valentine’s packages this time of year, which are not only affordable, but can also take care of much of the planning. Take advantage of them! Enjoy a couple’s massage included in the rate or a bottle of chilled champagne with some chocolates waiting in your room.

You can easily up the “wow factor” on your getaway by adding a few other experiences. In New York City, a horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park would definitely be on my list of special things to do on Valentine’s Day, and this is a great idea for any other city getaway it as well. In my hometown of Chicago, I would suggest the Chocolate Tour, a delicious way to experience the city any time, but especially fitting for this holiday. In San Francisco, consider taking a ferry across the bay to Sausalito to watch the sun set over the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring a bottle of champagne, some chocolate covered strawberries and don’t forget a blanket!

2. Couple’s Spa Escape
Who wouldn’t welcome some time to unplug and get pampered? If the thought of a one-hour massage leaves you wishing for more, then a couple’s spa escape might be perfect for you. There is a wide range of possibilities, depending on how much time and money you want to spend and how far you want to travel. You can simply book several different services at your local day spa or one in a city nearby (look for Valentine’s Day specials). If you want to kick it up a few more notches, head to a destination spa for some serious pampering, specialty classes, activities, delicious healthy cuisine and more.

3. Winter Fun Weekend
If you are a couple who loves to ski, take advantage of the fact that Valentine’s Day is in February, one of the prime months for skiing. While I personally love Colorado, many places, possibly closer to home, will do just fine. And while you might enjoy carving lines in fresh powder, you should get equally excited about the après ski part of the mountain vibe. Picture yourself chilling in a hot tub or with a glass of wine in front of the fire place, or enjoying a hot stone massage or romantic dinner at a chalet. If skiing isn’t your thing, consider snowshoeing, ice-skating, or even tubing!

Romantic ski resort recommendation: Valdoro Mountain Lodge by Hilton Grand Vacations Suites in Breckenridge, Colorado

4. Romantic Beach Retreat
Some couples simply prefer beach and sun. If you are nodding your head in agreement, I suggest a quick escape to the Caribbean (the weather in continental U.S., including warmer locations such as Florida or California, can be unpredictable in February). With a little advance planning, an extended weekend in the islands can be quite affordable and is a great way to enjoy some romantic time, not to mention cure those February winter blues.

There is something for every couple in the Caribbean. Total romantics can enjoy long walks on powdery sand beaches and quiet sunset dinners. More adventurous types will love snorkeling, diving or deep see fishing. And couples that want to dance the night away can find a lively band playing salsa and merengue.

Depending on your home location, some of my favorite easy-access destinations you should consider are Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic or Riviera Maya in Mexico. For those living on the West Coast, I love the Cabo San Lucas area.

Romantic beach resort recommendations: Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico, Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa in Jamaica, and Hilton Puerto Vallarta Resort in Mexico

5. Valentine’s Day Cruise
If you like cruising, this can be another great idea for a quick romantic getaway. While there are many options in terms of days at sea and destinations, a simple weekend cruise that starts on Valentine’s Day or sails during the Valentine’s weekend would be a very romantic, memorable and quite affordable experience. The best part is that other than booking your trip and getting to your port, you don’t need to worry about much more. Simply enjoy the beautiful views and sights you will visit, the restaurants, bars, nightly entertainment or spa services on board, and just being together.

Whatever you plan and wherever you decide to go, a Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!
