1. Down on the Farm
Venture into the countryside with the kids to pick apples or pumpkins. Your whole family can enjoy simple pleasures such as hayrides, cider and fresh baked goods, and corn mazes at pick-your-own-fruit farms and festivals from coast to coast.

2. Two-Wheeled Tours
Cycling is more pleasant once the weather has cooled and the crowds have retreated. So now's the time to load up the bike rack and explore charming small towns and historical sites together. Many regions have built impressive recreational-trail networks.

Not enough bicycles to go around? Many popular trails offer rentals by the hour or day.

3. Steamboat or Love Boat
Whether it's on a river, lake or ocean, taking a small cruise is an unforgettable way to view the scenery. And with trip options as short as an hour or two, it doesn't have to be expensive. Want to get a workout? Rent a kayak or canoe to get closer to the water, and later, check into a cozy local bed and breakfast for the perfect weekend getaway.

4. Picture Perfect
Make a trip to the outdoors last by packing a camera and enjoy your photos for years to come. Head into the woods to capture the leaves before they drop. You can keep it casual or plan your getaway around the most promising locations for photography. Spend some time framing up your shots to capture your memories beautifully. If you'd like help, outdoor photography workshops can provide expert instruction on how to shoot the perfect photos in the fall.

5. Road Show
Fall is prime time for fantastic arts and craft fairs. Round up a few friends, decide on a favorite fair and hit the tables. Hundreds of these fairs take place on any given weekend this time of year, but the most promising events are “juried,” meaning that the exhibitors have been handpicked and the fairs have a balance among different craft types.
