How to Eat Healthy While Traveling

Taking a vacation and worried about the dining options? Follow these tips to take a more wholesome approach.

Travel doesn’t have to be synonymous with eating junk food. Eating healthy can be trickier on the road, but it’s possible to make nutritious choices even on a family trip. Whether you are traveling with your family, for business or for a girlfriends’ getaway, a bit of planning can go a long way towards mindful eating. Here are four tips to eat better while traveling:

1. Pack Snacks for Everyone in the Family
We are so used to packing snacks for our children that sometimes we forget to pack wholesome options for ourselves. Fruit and vegetables, paired with protein like cheese, nuts or hummus, are great for mid-morning and afternoon snacks to keep you going (and away from the local bakery).

I have a few favorite healthy snacks:

  • Vegetables such as cut up peppers, cucumber, celery and jicama
  • Fruits such as mango, grapes, strawberries, blueberries or cantaloupe
  • Applesauce packets
  • Dried fruits such as raisins, banana chips and apples
  • Almonds or sunflower seeds
  • Organic mozzarella cheese sticks
  • Single serving size packets of almond butter or hummus (to be paired with the cut up vegetables)

2. Visit a Local Grocery Store or Food Market
One of my favorite ways to eat better while traveling is to visit local markets and grocery stores, especially if we are traveling internationally. A trip to the market becomes an educational experience as much as a shopping expedition. Try the local fruits and vegetables and stock up on snacks or breakfast items to keep in your hotel room. During the spring and summer, local markets are alive with vendors, and you can often learn a lot about a destination just by people watching the locals at the market.

3. Choose Grilled Fish or Chicken
I am a foodie, so for me, travel and food go hand-in-hand. Grilled or broiled fish (or chicken) can be equally as delicious for dinner without compromising your foodie tendencies. In fact, grilled fish with a sauce on the side can enhance the flavors of the spices or herbs that are used because there are fewer distractions on the plate. Plus, if we are visiting an ocean or seaside destination, I never miss the chance to taste local fish as simply as I can to savor the taste.

4. Order Dessert to Share
You are on vacation and you want to celebrate, right? Making healthy choices does not have to mean cutting out all desserts. My plan of attack when I see a dessert menu with things like chocolate mousse is to persuade my family to share. We order one (or two) desserts for the table and ask for several spoons and forks. This way, we can each satisfy our sweet tooth without feeling like we need to be rolled out of the restaurant.

Now, we all know that sometimes you feel like going all out. Maybe the fries are calling your name along an oceanfront boardwalk, or the tempting gelato on the streets of Rome or Florence makes your head turn every time you walk by. A few indulgences are worth it and can be enjoyed even more if they are the exception instead of the norm and you generally eat healthy while traveling.
