How to Fit in a Date While on Family Vacation

Want to go on a date on vacation? One mom weighs in on the best ways to go about it.

In today’s world of hectic schedules, homework and sports practices, going on a family vacation is a chance to spend precious time with our growing kids. But as much as we love every minute with our children, we’ve also learned that having a little date time is important to our family, too. Here are my tips for finding time for a date while on family vacation.

Consider a Balcony Date
If your kids are younger or go to bed at an early time this is a perfect solution! Pour your favorite beverage and bring a little dessert or snack and enjoy some adult conversation all while staying within 10 feet of your sleeping children. Our rooms at Hilton St. Augustine Historic Bayfront and Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort both had perfect balcony set ups.

Take Advantage of Hotel Kids Programs
Some hotels have supervised kids programs where you can drop off your children for a few hours of fun and games while you play tennis, have a relaxing meal or take a romantic walk. For example, at the all-inclusive Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort there is a free kids club called “Vacation Station” that offers supervised games and activities on a daily basis. And in Florida, Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa offers “Kids Krew” which provides a range of day and evening activities. The kids usually appreciate this chance to play with other kids and you can relax knowing they are having fun with qualified hotel staff.

Look Into Other Area Camps
Another option if your hotel doesn’t have its own kids program is to look into local day camps where you can sign up by the day. We did this while staying at Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, and for one day the kids had a chance to play group games, boogie board in the ocean, and make tie-dye shirts at Funky Fish Ocean Camp. It was just enough time for a date walk and leisurely lunch for my husband and me.

Hire a Babysitter
A final option is to ask the hotel concierge to recommend a babysitter or childcare service. Be sure to interview the potential sitter in advance and discuss their qualifications and your expectations. Make sure to talk about all details such as the hourly rate you will be paying, if you will be providing food for them, and where they will park.

Family vacation is definitely about spending time together, but sometimes a little break is good for everyone so think about trying these ideas on your next trip!
