Tackle your most common washing machine mishaps with our stain-combating tips.



When conquering the ever-growing dirty laundry lingering around your household, it is understandable that, sometimes, the littlest of things slip through the cracks. Here are a few quick tips to tackling the remnants of ink, lipstick and candy.

Materials
Rubbing alcohol
Paper towel
Laundry detergent
Washing machine
Plastic bucket
Cold water

Tip: Always test these solutions on an unseen area of the item before treating its entirety. For silk or wool items, wash by hand.

Instructions

Ink

  1. Apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area
  2. Absorb the stain using a paper towel
  3. Apply detergent to the stain and let it set for 20 minutes
  4. Wash in warm water with detergent. Examine the garment and if stain remains, repeat steps 1-3 before drying

  1. Rinse the affected item in cold water
  2. Fill a plastic bucket with cold water and washing detergent, using 2 1/2 tablespoons per one gallon of water
  3. Soak the item for up to 30 minutes
  4. Wash in warm water with detergent. Examine the item and if stain remains, repeat steps 1-3 before drying

Candy

  1. Rinse the affected item in cold water
  2. Apply detergent to the stain and let it set for 20 minutes
  3. Wash in warm water with detergent. Examine the item and if stain remains, repeat steps 1-2 before drying

To get out makeup (foundation or mascara) off of towels. I use Shave Cream (the cheaper the better). I rub it in and it usually works. I rent cabins and this works most of the time.
