If you’re a busy lady and would rather spend your downtime at home relaxing and enjoying your family rather than scrubbing and scouring, these 5 tips will help you cut down on the work without sacrificing the comfort and satisfaction of a tidy home.

Make a schedule. One of the best things I ever did for my sanity was come up with a cleaning schedule. I don’t always stick to it, and it may change at various times throughout the year, but just the act of writing out the schedule gives me an idea of what I should be doing on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. My preference is to clean one room a day and do one load of laundry a day in addition to the usual washing dishes, wiping down kitchen surfaces, making beds, etc. Then I scatter things like cleaning the fridge and the windows in throughout the month. Without my schedule I tend to pace around not knowing where to start, wasting valuable time.

Use the right products. There are some amazing cleaning products on the market that practically do all the work for you, and can be used in different areas of your house. My favorite is the Magic Eraser, I use it for almost everything. Nothing restores things back to bright white quite like it and it isn’t made with harsh chemicals. I’m also a huge fan of dish detergent, which I dilute and use to clean kitchen surfaces, and love my Swiffer for daily upkeep of my ceramic floors.

Delegate. If someone else is physically capable of doing it, let them. Dividing the responsibility up between members of the household will take some of the pressure off of you and give everyone more quality time to spend together. Even toddlers can get in on the action by helping sort laundry, wipe down countertops with a humid rag and clean up their own toys. Plus, it will teach your kids about personal responsibility and taking pride in their home.

Set a timer. Straightening up messes and putting everything back in its rightful place is one of the biggies as far as time, especially when you have kids. I for one find myself “picking up” the house a minimum of three times a day. But, so that it doesn’t seem like such an endless task, I usually only do it for 10 minutes at a time. Set a timer and you’ll be amazed at how much you can actually get done in such a short amount of time.

Work while you sleep. Lastly, if you plan things well, there are some cleaning tasks that can be done while you sleep! Throw a load of laundry in the washer or dryer before you go to bed, and it will be ready for the next stage of laundering when you wake up in the morning. Spray your oven down with cleaner at night and the next morning the gunk will wipe up super easily. Just think about any time-consuming jobs and figure out if you can get them working on their own while you’re relaxing.
