Spring might be the traditional time to deep clean your home, but we think fall cleaning is even better. OK, hear us out. Fall is an opportunity to dust, scrub and clean the nooks and crannies we were too busy to address all summer – and better yet, we can fit it in ahead of the hectic holiday season. Plus, deep cleaning helps remove allergens and germs that might be hiding in our homes, and it gives us a chance to brighten up our indoor spaces before the sky turns gloomy.
Have we convinced you? Here’s how to tackle a thorough fall cleaning for your home.
Clean up the Kitchen
If summer parties and backyard barbecues have left your kitchen in a less-than-sparkling state, now’s the time to scrub the oven and stovetop with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Extra Durable, clean out and wipe down the cupboards, and defrost the fridge and freezer. Pack away the grilling tools and throw away any chipped or cracked cups and plates to make more room in your cupboards.
Let in the Light
Beat the winter blues by making the most of the brief bit of natural light we get on a wintry day. Clean windows with glass cleaner and cloth-like Bounty DuraTowels, and remove any mold caused by condensation using tea tree essential oil mixed with water and a damp sponge. Don’t forget to clean skylights and mirrors, too.
Dust and Sweep
Closed windows and high interior heat create the perfect breeding ground for allergens and dust mites, so get rid of them before they become a problem. Vacuum all carpets and rugs, and clean hard floors with a Swiffer Sweeper. Make sure to clean under furniture, too! Then dust shelves, baseboards, fan blades, blinds and ceiling corners with a Swiffer 360 Duster Super Extender – it extends up to 6 feet to trap and lock dust and dirt in hard-to-reach places.
Pack Away Your Summer Clothes
Moths love damp, sweaty clothes, so wash and dry your summer wardrobe, making sure to dry garments thoroughly before you pack them away, preferably in lidded plastic boxes. Add Downy Unstopables to the wash cycle so your stored clothing smells irresistibly fresh – even when you unpack them again in a few months! Don’t forget to store clothing in sealed, airtight containers to prevent moths.
Get Rid of Indoor Pests
Halloween might be right around the corner, but that doesn’t mean you have to host spiders and other creepy crawlies that often retreat indoors as the weather gets cooler. Learn how to prevent them with our six easy tips.
Spruce up Your Soft Furnishings
Sweaty legs, sunscreen and ice cream spills have probably made your couches and chairs a bit grubby. Vacuum them thoroughly, and spray with Febreze FABRIC to clean away odors and leave behind a fresh scent. And don’t forget to air out your mattresses and wash duvet covers and pillows with Tide PODS to prevent dust mites. (Check all fabric care labels before washing to ensure there are no specific cleaning instructions to follow.)
Make it Cozy
In Denmark they call it “hygge” – making your home a happy, welcoming place to snuggle up. Febreze candles in fall scents (Fresh Fall Pumpkin is our pick), soft throws and blankets, and a log fire or wood-burning stove will give your home a warm, relaxed feel.
