As you gear up for spring cleaning, you may feel the itch to get organized and update your home. This is especially true with the home office, which often is the first place clutter tends to pile up.
If you’re looking to go the extra mile and give the home office a makeover, here are some ideas to help jumpstart your office makeover for under .
You can find large, inexpensive corkboards at your local office supply store typically for around . Use spray adhesive to adhere a large remnant piece of fabric onto the corkboard. Wrap the fabric around the edges, and staple with a staple gun. If you’re using a solid fabric, add tacks along the edges of the corkboard to create a nailhead look. Use the corkboard to display anything from favorite magazine clippings or to keep important documents on hand.
Paint the walls
A quick and budget friendly way to drastically change the look of a space is to paint the walls! Does your office feel dark? Lighting may not always be the issue here. Choose a lighter paint color to brighten up the space. Changing your wall color from a strong, vivid color to a soothing neutral can help you feel more relaxed while working, too.
Update Old Furniture With Paint
Paint isn’t just for your walls! If you have an old piece of furniture that has good lines and still functions well for your office, update it with a fresh coat of paint.
Lightly sand the piece of furniture, then add two or three coats of satin paint in your favorite color. You can also get creative with the paint. Try a different color for the drawers on a storage piece, or paint a stripe down the middle of a dresser. Most filing cabinets can also be painted. If your filing cabinet is metal, look in the spray paint section for specialized paint. Don’t be afraid to get creative with office furniture — you might even consider stenciling a design on the front or top of the filing cabinet.
If you have loose papers and magazines scattered around your office, decorative boxes are a great way to tackle the clutter. You can often find boxes and magazine files for around or less each, and they come in a variety of colors and materials. Designate a box for anything: bills, photos, receipts, documents relating to your children or pets, or anything else that can be filed away. Fill a bookcase with the boxes and magazine files, and your office will instantly look pulled together.
Utilize Decorative Drinking Glasses For Storage
Next time you’re at your favorite local home décor store, browse the decorative glassware section — for your office! Beautiful drinking glasses are perfect for holding pens, pencils and scissors on top of your desk.
Swap Out Your Light Fixture
Does your office feel cold and uninviting? Swap out your lackluster ceiling fan or builder basic flush mount light with a chandelier. You can often find beautiful chandeliers and pendant lights at your local hardware store for less than . This will help your office feel more like home!
Upgrade Your Desk Chair
Office chairs can be an eye sore. Instantly update your office by swapping your old office chair on wheels for a dining room chair. Upholstered dining chairs are especially comfortable and lend an elegant air to the entire setting.
