The house is decorated, the living room is ready and the fridge is stocked with delicious food for the holiday dinner. The last item on your holiday to-do list is probably the one you’ve been dreading: deep cleaning the bathroom. Sure, scrubbing tiles and cleaning the toilet are a far cry from what you’d rather be doing (that is, bingeing your favorite TV show while laying on the couch and eating cookies), but our step-by-step guide will make the task fast and easy.
1. Dust First
Remove dust and hair from the bathroom before spraying cleaners or dampening surfaces. Otherwise, the dust will stick to the moisture on bathroom surfaces once you start wiping down the sink, tub, toilet and floor. Use a Swiffer 360 Duster to dust the exhaust fan, ceiling (don’t forget the corners!), light fixtures and other nooks and crannies in the bathroom. Then use a Swiffer Sweeper to trap and lock dirt, dust and hair on the floor.
2. Mirror and Sink
Use a spray glass cleaner and a Bounty DuraTowel to clean dust and grime from the mirror. Then use a Mr. Clean Foaming Bath Scrubber to clean the sink, focusing especially on the faucet and drain, where grime can easily build up. Use a dampened Bounty DuraTowel to wipe away excess foam, and then dry the sink thoroughly.
First, make sure that the drain is in good working order. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar. The mixture will fizz and dissolve any grease and dirt, and will also help unclog hair. Leave it for 10 minutes, and then pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to flush it out. (Use caution when handling the hot kettle!) Finally, tackle the tile, grout, shower door and tub with a Mr. Clean Foaming Bath Scrubber to remove built-up grime and soap scum.
Clean your toilet from the inside out. First, squirt toilet bowl cleaner into the bowl, making sure to target the under-side of the rim. Wait 10 minutes, and then scrub thoroughly with a toilet brush. (Disinfect this brush regularly by soaking it in a bleach and water mixture.) Then spray the entire toilet with Mr. Clean Multi-Surfaces Spray, and wipe down with a Bounty DuraTowel.
A Swiffer WetJet is perfect for cleaning the bathroom floor – the solution dissolves dirt and grime as you mop, pulling it deep into the cloth and off your floors. Make sure to clean the area behind the toilet!
6. Final Touches
Replace dirty hand towels with clean ones, restock the Charmin Ultra Soft toilet paper and spray the room with Febreze AIR in a holiday scent (we love Fresh Cut Pine). Better yet, light a Febreze Candle and place it on the sink to help eliminate odors. As a finishing touch, assemble a holiday party bathroom basket to help your guests freshen up during the evening.
