5 Easy Summery Sweet Treats to Make With Kids

These delicious, simple treats are fun to make with kids, and versatile too.

Many of my own favorite and most useful childhood memories — the ones I draw on and am thankful for, above all — involve cooking with my family. Especially desserts! Even if you are not good at baking (like me), there are loads of foolproof, delicious sweet treats you can prepare with kids without difficulty. Here, several of my favorite easy summery desserts to make with my own daughter.

Strawberry or raspberry shortcakes: I made these for the first time with my grandfather when I was 6 years old, and it’s a memory that brings me so many happy thoughts anytime I recall it. To prepare these sweet crowd-pleasing treats, first, if possible, take your kids berry picking (which we did!). Nothing is nicer than strolling through a farm on a beautiful day and picking fresh food right off a bush!

Then, bake up some fresh buttermilk biscuits, which require only a couple of basic pantry ingredients, and are ready in a flash -- or, cheat and buy the pre-made dough that comes in the refrigerator sections of most markets, like we often do!

While these bake, whip up some fresh whipped cream with our favorite secret ingredient: a teaspoon of vanilla. When the biscuits have cooled slightly, open them up and top with whipped cream and fresh cut berries. Then, add another layer on top, and serve. YUM! It’s like sunshine on a plate.

Peach, apricot, plum, or berry crumbles: I have never met anyone who does not love a good crumble. And when the weather warms up and all this great fresh fruit starts growing all around, making a crumble is a great way to use up anything you have in excess or things that are getting over-ripe too fast. A crumble is not just quick and easy; it’s really versatile, because you can choose and mix whatever fruit you prefer or have on hand. The crumb mixture includes simply sugar, butter, cinnamon, and a little flour (and/or oats, if you prefer).

Blueberry, strawberry, mango, or mixed berry frozen yogurt pops: There’s really no secret here -- all you need to make your own, healthy, delicious frozen yogurt pops is some fresh fruit, half a banana, and some plain or vanilla yogurt. Blend these up (kids love pressing those buttons), and pour the smoothie mixture into ice cube trays or ice pop molds, and freeze. This is another simple, versatile, and delicious summery treat you can serve as a snack or dessert on any warm, sunny day.

Chocolate frozen bananas: Nothing is more simple than this kid-favorite sweet and super cool treat. I’ve been making these with my daughter since she was younger than 2! Simply peel a banana (or have your kid peel it), and cover it with chocolate sauce from a jar or a mixture of melted chocolate chips combined with a tablespoon of butter or cream added, as an emulsifier. That’s the secret! Freeze and enjoy! It’s way easier than ANY pie! (Other fruit that are delicious just simply frozen on their own, as a cool sweet treat, are green or red grapes and cubed melon or watermelon.)
