I grew up visiting my abuelitas each week, and from them I learned to replace soft drinks with natural fruit juices, especially those made from tropical fruits.

These natural fruit juices prepared at home have become part of my childhood memories and over time I've learned this is true for many of my amigas Latinas. In their homes they also serve these easy-to-prepare juices. Now my children ask me to make them, and with pleasure I prepare them with whichever fruits are in season. Here I share a few of my favorite juice recipes:

GUAVA JUICE
Ingredients for 4 servings
6 ripe guavas, peeled and cut in fourths
4 cups water
4 tablespoons sugar

PINEAPPLE JUICE

TAMARIND JUICE
Ingredients for 6 servings
1 cup tamarind pulp
½ cup sugar
5 cups water
plenty of ice

Directions: In the blender, combine tamarind pulp with water and sugar. Transfer the juice to a pitcher with plenty of ice. Serve very cold. You may need to add more sugar to counter the acidity of the tamarind.
