9 Tasty Mix-Ins That Make Hot Chocolate Even More Delicious

Whipped cream and marshmallows aren’t the only ways to top a mug of hot cocoa.

There’s nothing like a nice mug of hot cocoa to welcome us in from the cold winter weather. Surprise your family with some of these delicious hot cocoa mix-ins and toppings!

Hard Candies
Have some leftover candy canes? Pop one in a mug of cocoa to use as a stirrer and to add a little bit of peppermint flavor. Cinnamon sticks, chocolate straws, and rock candy swizzle sticks also make tasty stirrers.

Chocolate Syrup
Personalize each cup of cocoa by pouring chocolate syrup in the shape of a heart, a football, or the first letter of your kid’s name.

Ground Cinnamon
Cinnamon sprinkled on top of a little bit of whipped cream adds a lovely flavor that won’t overpower the scrumptious chocolate taste.

Sliced Bananas
Slice and freeze a banana, and pop a few cold slices in each mug before adding the hot chocolate. They’ll help cool it down quicker, and when your kids are done sipping, they will find a nice surprise of chocolate-soaked bananas at the bottom of their mugs!

Flavored Extracts
Try a few drops of vanilla, peppermint, or almond extract for special flavor.

Peanut Butter
Peanut butter’s second-best friend (next to jelly, of course) is chocolate. Mix a tablespoon (adjust for personal taste) of peanut butter in with the hot cocoa for a delicious twist on an old favorite.

Kids love sprinkles. Add sprinkles or even colored sanding sugar on top of a dollop of whipped cream for pretty-as-a-picture hot cocoa.

Extra Chocolate
Chocolate chips, shaved chocolate, or even a piece of a candy bar wedged in the mug make chocolate lovers love their cocoa even more.

What goes better with cocoa than cookies? Crumble your favorite cookie and sprinkle on top, with or without whipped cream. Slurp them down or fish them out with a spoon after they’ve softened but before they dissolve. Yum!
