How to Tell if an Avocado is Fresh
Look for firm, unripe fruit, unless you plan to use it immediately. Place in a paper bag and keep at room temperature until ripened, then transfer to the refrigerator and use within a week. To test for ripeness, hold it in the palm of your hand and squeeze gently — a ripe avocado will give slightly.

How to Pit an Avocado
Cut the avocado in half lengthwise around the pit. Twist the two halves apart, then remove and discard the pit (if it’s stubborn, tap your knife into it and rotate to loosen). The flesh discolors quickly, so squeeze fresh lime or lemon juice on each half to prevent browning.

How to Pair Avocado
Couple avocado with mango, citrus fruit, cilantro or shrimp, and update the classic BLT sandwich with fresh avocado slices and a fried egg. Or make a big batch of guacamole to serve with chips, spread on toast, or top corn on the cob.

How to Prep & Recipe Idea
Just before use, pit and peel the avocado. To slice or chop the fruit, remove the pit, then peel away the skin, like you would a banana. Add a creamy twist to a traditional lunch staple with our avocado egg salad recipe.
