Not Your Average Breakfast: Orange Citrus Scones Bring the Flavor

Not Your Average Breakfast: Orange Citrus Scones Bring the Flavor

Your everyday scone never looked so good. Because – sweet, citrus orange.

Orange lovers of the world, unite.

Because this isn’t your average scone. In the land where scones reign as a fan favorite in bakeries and coffee shops far and wide, the beloved orange flavor takes this sweet dessert to new citrus heights.

Give yourself a treat in the morning. Why not? It’s arguably one of the most stressful times of the day, so why not have a little something to look forward to amidst the chaos of getting out the door. And, one thing I’ve learned from baking is that some things are just worth the extra effort. So go all out. Make the glaze and the candied fruit (if you have the time).

But if not, just make the scones. They’re still downright delicious.

Orange Scones

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, frozen

Candied Slices
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 orange

Scone Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Mix the sugar and orange zest in a large bowl until fragrant and the zest is evenly distributed throughout
  2. Add flour, baking powder and salt to the bowl, and then whisk
  3. Grate the frozen butter and add it to the flour mixture. Combine using two knives (or a pastry cutter) until the mixture is coarse, like sand. Set aside
  4. In another bowl, whisk together egg, cream and vanilla
  5. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and stir just to combine
  6. Spread the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and shape into a 4" x12" rectangle
  7. Cut dough into 4 equal pieces and cut each piece diagonally to form 8 triangle scones.
  8. Transfer the scones to a large baking sheet (lined with parchment paper) and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until lightly golden and cooked through

Candied Slices

  1. Cut a freshly washed orange in half, lengthwise. Use a sharp knife to make thin slices of the orange and remove any seeds in the slices
  2. Over medium-high heat, combine sugar and water in a sauté pan. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves and then add the orange slices, making one single layer without overlapping
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let simmer 20-30 minutes, turning the slices at least once
  4. Remove from the heat. Let cool and store until ready to use

The Glaze
Mix the orange syrup from the candied oranges and sifted powdered sugar in a bowl until the mixture is smooth. Add more or less syrup to adjust the consistency of the glaze.

Pulling it Together
Place the scones on a wire rack and drizzle the glaze on top. Next, add the candied oranges on top of the glaze and let set until glaze has started to dry. Enjoy!
