Whether you’re planning a fun family treat or a full-blown ice cream float party, here is everything you need to know to get started with ice cream floats, plus 10 delicious variations on the classic.

Basic Ice Cream Float Recipe

Ingredients
2 scoops vanilla ice cream
6-8 ounces soda

Optional Toppings
Whipped cream
Sprinkles
Hot fudge
Maraschino cherries

Instructions

  1. Pour 4 ounces of plain soda into a parfait glass or other large dessert or drinking glass
  2. Add the scoops of ice cream
  3. Top off with remaining soda
  4. If using, top float with whipped cream, sprinkles, hot fudge and a cherry

  5. Serve with a straw and a long spoon

Once you have the basic recipe, try one of these 10 exciting variations:

1. Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer Float


Pour 6-8 ounces of ginger ale into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops vanilla ice cream. Top off with more ginger ale.

2. Cola Float
Pour 6-8 ounces of cola into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops vanilla ice cream. Top off with more cola.

3. Black Cow Float
Pour 6-8 ounces of root beer into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops chocolate or vanilla ice cream and 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup or hot fudge. Top off with root beer.

4. Brown Cow Float
Pour 6-8 ounces of cola into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops of chocolate or vanilla ice cream and 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup or hot fudge. Top off with cola.

5. Pink Lemonade Float
Pour 4 ounces pink lemonade into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops lemon sorbet. Top off with sparkling water or soda.

6. Iced Tea Float
Pour 6-8 ounces strong, sweet iced tea into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops vanilla ice cream.

7. Raspberry Orange Ice Cream Soda Float
Pour 4 ounces orange juice into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops raspberry gelato. Top off with 2-4 ounces sparkling water.

8. Coffee Chocolate Chip Float
Combine a scoop of coffee ice cream and a scoop chocolate chip ice cream with 2 ounces freshly brewed coffee. Top off with 4-6 ounces of cola.

9. Orange Sherbet Float
Pour 4 ounces lemonade into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops orange sherbet. Top off with seltzer or orange soda.

10. Apple Cider Float
Pour 6 ounces apple cider into a parfait glass and add 2 scoops vanilla ice cream. Top off with 2 ounces ginger ale. If desired, finish with a pinch each of ground nutmeg and cinnamon on top.
