Onion Rings 2 Ways

Learn to make baked and fried onion rings at home, plus 4 tasty dipping sauces.

You’ll need: A kitchen thermometer

1 1/4 cup flour (1/4 cup set aside for dredging)
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
Peanut, vegetable or canola oil
1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch rings


  1. Mix flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, salt and milk in bowl, set aside
  2. Heat oil in a large heavy-bottom pot or cast iron pan until thermometer registers 375 F*
  3. Place onions and dredging flour into a large zip-top bag. Shake to cover rings
  4. Remove rings one at a time and dip in batter
  5. Using tongs, remove and drop 3-4 at a time into hot oil. Cook for 45 seconds, flip and cook until golden brown
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels

*Tip: If you don’t have a thermometer, drip some batter into the oil — if it sizzles and floats, you’re good to go.

Baked Onion Rings Recipe
Serves: 2-4

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch rings
2 1/2 cups low fat buttermilk
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 cup cracker crumbs


  1. Place onion slices in shallow baking dish. Cover with buttermilk and soak for 1 hour
  2. Preheat oven to 450 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or cooking spray
  3. Combine breadcrumbs and cracker crumbs in large dish*
  4. Lift rings out of buttermilk individually and remove excess liquid. Coat well in crumb mixture
  5. Place breaded rings on baking sheet and coat lightly with cooking spray. Bake 12-15 minutes until golden brown

*Tip: Substitute seasoned ground crackers with potato chips, pretzels, corn flake cereal, crisp rice cereal or croutons for a extra crunchy play on breadcrumbs.

  • Seasoned Fried Onion Rings: Combine 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper and add to the dredging flour before coating the slices.
  • Spicy Baked Onion Rings: Add 4 tablespoons of hot sauce or 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper to the buttermilk before soaking.
  • Barbecue Baked Onion Rings: Mix 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce, 1 tablespoon hot sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Coat onion slices in mixture before soaking in buttermilk.

4 Dipping Sauces
For each recipe, mix ingredients in a bowl and let flavors meld for an hour before serving.

Zesty Onion Ring Sauce
1 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons chili sauce
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Cajun Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 teaspoons horseradish
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Ranch Sauce
1/4 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 garlic clove, minced
Pinch salt
Pinch pepper
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon dill, minced
1 teaspoon chives, minced
1 tablespoon parsley, minced
3 tablespoons buttermilk

Barbecue Sour Cream 
1/2 cup sour cream
3 tablespoons buttermilk
2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon hot sauce
2 pinches salt
2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced
