Simple 7-layer bars make it easy to toss in your favorite sweet ingredient.

By Molly Culbertson

These delicious treats need no special equipment: Just spread layers of goodies in a baking pan (or pre-made crust; we won’t tell) and bake.

7-layer bars have been a staple of picnics, brown-bag lunches and bake sales for decades — and with good reason: they’re as deliciously irresistible as they are simple to make. Here’s a recipe for the original, plus some utterly delectable variations.

Classic 7-Layer Bars
Makes 36 bars
Prep time: 5 minutes
Bake time: 25 minutes

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/3 cups shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F
  2. Mix together the graham cracker crumbs and melted butter. Press evenly over the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking pan.
  3. Layer the chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and walnuts on top. Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the layers. Sprinkle with coconut
  4. Bake bars until edges are golden brown, about 25 minutes.
  5. Cool on rack before cutting. (Toss the tin and they’ll be none the wiser; or transfer the crust into your own glassware) Store, tightly covered, at room temperature
