7 Kid Party Favors That Won’t Drive Other Parents Crazy

Awesome birthday party goodie bags that every parent (and kid) will love to take home.

The scene: you are driving home from yet another birthday party for one of your kiddo’s BFFs. In the backseat, your child is examining the party favor. You cringe as you think of the contents within the little goodie bag. Double bonus cringe points if there’s a balloon attached to the handles of said bag that’s now blocking your rear view mirror.

Party favors. Goodie bags. Swag bags. No matter what you call them, they make parents crazy. Why? Because in every home, there’s the bin, that bin overflowing with plastic little toys and bits from those bags. Average playing time of those toys? Fourteen minutes (and that’s being generous).

I’m putting it out there: I think we parents can do better in selecting what to hand out at the end of our birthday parties. Wait, I’ll go one better! We owe it to each other to hand out something better! Here, fabulous, low-cost party favors any child – and any parent -- would love to bring home.

1. Comic books – From the old school classic characters to those new-and-improved stories of superheroes, comic books are perfect takeaway gifts every kid will enjoy reading. Just think, maybe it will kick off a new drawing hobby or just boost that reading mojo.

2. Art supplies – A great go-to gift for all age groups, art supplies are always cool. From markers to colored pencils, sidewalk chalk to small inkpads, anything goes. For extra oomph, include little art project directions on creating fingerprint critters or a step-by-step guide to drawing kitty faces.

3. Sport water bottles – Stashed in a locker, in the car, or in their backpacks, portable water bottles are practical, yet trendy, and, yes, good for the environment. The other nifty thing about this favor: They work for any party theme with any age group and for boys and girls.

4. Funky writing utensils – Your little guests will love getting a snazzy pen or pencil to take home too. Pair it with a small pad of paper to inspire some journal writing or kick off some pen pal fun.

5. Crazy straws – These reusable straws are cousins to the funky pens. All loop-de-loopy and available in every color in the rainbow, it makes any meal a party. Tie three or four in a bunch and make it a “crazy straw bouquet,” or create a combo pack with a personalized plastic cup.

6. Deck of cards with printed game instructions – Again, this is an all-purpose, works-for-any-party-any-age favor. Provide your guests with some post-party ideas, and print out some easy instructions for classic games like Gin Rummy, Go Fish, and Hearts on colored cardstock in a cool font.

7. An at-home DIY activity – This could be your child’s favorite cookie recipe and a mason jar with some of the ingredients. Or maybe a pile of specialty paper, tied with a bow, and instructions on how to make a variety of origami animals or the best paper airplane. Parents will love this take-home favor as you’ve just provided them an awesome activity to do the next time they are stuck inside on a rainy afternoon.
