8 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Your Family

We share our favorite recipes, crafts and activities to enjoy with your kids on St. Patrick’s Day!

Who says adults get to have all the fun on St. Patrick’s Day? Surprise your kids with an Irish-themed celebration with our easy-to-plan fun St. Patrick’s Day activities.

1. Add a Touch of Green in Food
A little green food coloring can go a long way on St. Patrick’s Day. Add a few drops to cups of milk to turn it green, or mix green food coloring into apple jelly and use it to make your kids’ peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

2. Make a Rainbow Cake
Make a vanilla cake batter (buy the box in the baking aisle, or make it from scratch), and divide it evenly into seven small bowls – one for each color of the rainbow. Get the kids to help you add food coloring to each bowl of batter – you should have red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Pour each color into a separate round cake pan and bake each layer according to the box directions, until a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean. You should have seven separate cake layers. Let cool. Stack the layers, adding a layer of frosting in between each one. Then frost the entire cake, and add rainbow sprinkles.

Tip: Whisk away the mess with Cascade and Bounty: Wipe down counters (and sticky hands) with a Bounty paper towel, and add a Cascade Platinum ActionPac to your dishwashing cycle to clean those cake batter bowls.

3. Go Traditional
If you opt to skip the leprechauns and rainbows this year in favor of a traditional Irish dinner, try a few Irish-inspired dishes you’ve never had before. Irish stew and Irish mashed potatoes (with bacon and kale) are sure to please kids and adults alike.

4. Craft a Blarney Stone
Known as the Stone of Eloquence, visitors come from around the world to lean down and kiss the Blarney Castle’s famous stone. Luckily, you don’t have to travel to Ireland to pucker up – just make your own stone! Choose a small, smooth rock and help the kids decorate it with green paint, glitter, St. Patrick’s Day stickers and any other embellishments you’d like, and (according to myth) you’ll be awarded with the gift of oration. (We recommend not letting kids actually kiss a painted, glittery stone!)

Tip: Facing a big crafting mess? Lucky that you have a Swiffer Sweep + Vac to clean up the floor (it’s conveniently rechargeable and cordless!) and Bounty paper towels to wipe up messy surfaces.

5. Create a Paper-Plate Leprechaun
Break out the paint and crafting supplies, and have your kids create a cheerful leprechaun out of a paper plate. Have them paint the plate’s border with orange hair, glue on googly eyes and draw a smile. Help them cut a hat from of construction paper, and glue it to the leprechaun’s head. Display it proudly on your fridge!

6. Lucky Clovers
Any clover-making craft will be a hit with the kids, whether it’s making thumbprint clovers or clover stamps (made from a cut green pepper dipped in green paint).

For a project you can display as art, place your child’s painted hand onto a canvas four times to make four leaves, and then paint a stem. The handprints come out much smoother if you paint your child’s hand instead of having her dip it in the paint.

7. Go on a Scavenger Hunt
Hide treasures around your house or yard (think dollar store toys or chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil) and give your kids clues to follow. You can even cut leprechaun footprints from construction paper to leave a trail they can follow. They’ll have tons of fun trying to find the next toy or yummy treat.

8. Watch a Movie
Snuggle up on the couch with the kids and some of your St. Patrick’s Day treats for a movie. There are plenty of family-friendly options to choose from that range from children’s cartoons to movies teenagers and adults can enjoy.

St. Patrick’s Day is a great reason to celebrate your good luck and gratitude while teaching your kids a bit of Irish history (and pride for Irish families!) and spending some quality time together.
