Beat the Winter Blues with an Indoor Summer Party

Bring some warmth indoors with this idea for a summer party inside!

Putting away the lights, tinsel, ornaments and festive décor can be sad. We all wish the joy of the holiday season could continue, but reality hits us after the new year — back to the regular routine until spring.

Family celebrations shouldn’t have to end just because the calendar says Jan. 2. Instead of lamenting the passing of the holiday season, why not create your own holiday? It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, the simpler your made-up holiday is, the better. After all, the goal is to keep the spirit of the holiday season and give the family something extra to look forward to in the winter months.

What better way to get through the dreary season than by celebrating like it’s summer again? What we all miss about the warmer months are the treats: Eating ice cream, hosting barbeques and wearing bright colors are some favorite summer pastimes. It can be quite chilly in January, but why not dedicate a whole day and pretend it’s summer?

Here are some ideas to take away the winter blues! On your holiday, try one of these ideas or combine a few if you’re feeling the need for a true summertime break.

1. Get Dressed up
Turn on the heater and bring out your summer clothes. I love getting the chance to pull out my favorite sundress that’s been stored away for the past six months.

Let the kids pick out their favorite summer clothes too. Get all of your treats ahead of time, so you don’t have to experience the snow or cold winds. Break out the summer hairdos like cute braids and ponytails for you and the kids. And of course, you can’t forget your sandals!

2. Have a Summer Feast
No holiday is complete without a great meal. Use this day to enjoy all your favorite summer treats. When grocery shopping the week before, try to find as many summer treats or produce as you can.

If you can’t find fresh strawberries, get frozen ones and use them for summer smoothies. Pick up avocados, pineapple, watermelon and all your favorite barbecue meats and veggies. Hot dogs, ribs and burgers are all perfect for the kids. Don’t forget the ice cream, snow cones or ice pops.

If you want to have a fancier affair or a summer soiree, create delicious salads, grilled meat or steamed seafood and a pretty dessert. Invite friends or family over to share in the fun, and ask them to bring their favorite summer dishes for a summer potluck. Think of this day as an Independence Day-like celebration.

3. Let the Sunshine in
Bring out the bright colors like yellows, pinks and oranges. Regardless of the gray stormy skies outside, make your home shine like the sun. Easy and quick decorations like balloons, streamers, tablecloths and flowers will make your home feel like summer again.

Fill your home with the scent of a tropical or fruity candle and make sure to add little elements that remind you of summer and warmer days.

4. Family Fun
No holiday is complete without fun activities! Blow up a few beach balls to toss around and maybe even set up a bright piñata just for fun. If you can go outside, have the kids race and let the winner have the first pick at dessert. If it’s too cold outside, have a sack relay in hallway indoors. Blow bubbles in the kitchen.

Later that night, line up a collection of your favorite summer blockbuster movies, karaoke songs or dance video games.

We all love the hot cocoa, cozy sweaters and ice-skating, but you can enjoy that any day of winter. Celebrate the warm, balmy days you miss, and forget about the woes of winter with the holiday you create.
