How to Host a Holiday Gift-wrapping Party

How to Host a Holiday Gift-wrapping Party

Knock out an item on your to-do list and have some fun while you’re at it.

It may seem hard to justify taking time wrapping presents if your kids tear through the paper without a second thought. Sure, you could just put your gifts in a bag, but what’s the fun in that?

Instead, use this holiday chore as an opportunity to catch up with some friends while you wrap your gifts together!

Planning the Party
Set a date in early to mid-December for your party (the more advanced notice you can give the better) and let your friends know as soon as you’ve decided.

Before your friends arrive on the day of the party, review these ideas for putting on your hostess hat:

  • Think of ribbon alternatives, like yarn, sparkly garlands and colored twine
  • Display a box of holiday-themed odds and ends to add onto a bow, like mini ornaments, handmade snowflakes, holiday stickers, cookie cutters and silvery jingle bells
  • Recycle cute bags for odd-shaped gifts or reuse a gorgeous bow from last year
  • Serve easy-to-make snacks for your guests: Try a cheese and cracker platter or this delicious warm crab and cheese dip and a pitcher of juice
  • A holiday playlist of music to play in the background

What Your Friends Should Bring
Think of the party as more like a potluck. When each of your guests bring something, it takes some of the responsibility off of you while also giving everyone invited a chance to mix and match their wrapping materials.

Here are a few suggestions on what to ask your guests to bring:

Registration

Become a member
  • One roll or packet of wrapping paper (from kiddie-themed to traditional for variety)
  • Gift tags and a colored pen
  • Ribbons, bows and trims
  • Scissors and tape
  • Gifts!

Gift tags are a must, too. With so many presents, it’s easy to forget to add the “to” and “from” names on each item as soon as it’s wrapped. If it’s wrapped and set aside without a gift tag, no one will know what’s inside!

Throwing the Party
Collect your gift-wrapping supplies onto a big table or the floor with lots of space, and then spread out everyone’s paper and ribbons.

While you start wrapping, feel free to share decorating tips, stories and refreshments. Before you know it, those stacks of boxes will turn into beautifully wrapped packages ready for giving.

This wrap-and-chat party is a perfect way to meet with friends during this hectic season — and perhaps start a new tradition!
