5-Step DIY Seed Tape

5-Step DIY Seed Tape

Make homemade seed tape to make planting a garden a breeze.

Make Your Own Seed Tape
Perfect for small seeds like radishes and carrots — but still suitable for flower, herb and other vegetable seeds — crafting your own seed tape makes gardening easier, less messy and more affordable. It keeps plants properly spaced, in straight rows and saves pruning time later.

1/4 cup flour
2 tablespoons warm water
Bounty paper towels *
Small paintbrush
Airtight bag or container

*Tip: White party streamers, newspaper, thin paper bags and bath tissue are also great substitutions. Avoid items with colored ink to prevent dyes from affecting the seeds.

  1. In a small bowl, mix the flour and water until a thick paste forms. If it’s too runny, add more flour. If it’s too thick, add more water in small amounts
  2. Cut paper towels into 2-inch wide strips
  3. Use a pencil and ruler to space dots on the strip according to the seed packet’s directions. Place small dollops of flour paste across one side of the paper towel strip on each dot
  4. Place seeds on top of the paste, then fold the other half of the paper towel over, on top of the seeds. Allow the tape to dry completely and roll it into a coil. Store with its seed packet in a labeled and dated airtight bag, jar or storage container
  5. To plant : Place the strip on the surface of the ground or dig a small furrow and cover it with the amount of soil the seed packet’s instructions recommend. Gently mist with water to keep the ground continually moist

Tip: Homemade seed tape can be stored in an airtight container for up to a year.

Gifting Tip: Save empty cheese wheel cartons and place the rolled seed tape in it. Decorate the container with a crafty bow and give it to the gardener in your life.
