7 Ways to Give Your House a Makeover in an Afternoon (PHOTOS)

Make over your place for next to nothing with these seven sneaky tricks.

By Nicole Fabian-Weber

Every few years (or months, if you're like me), our tastes change. Our style evolves. What we once thought was amazing we now find to be ... meh. While it would be great to be able to redecorate our homes whenever we're feeling inspired or are into something new, for most of us, that's just not feasible. Decorating is expensive.

But! There certainly are ways to make over your place (in an afternoon, no less!) without breaking the bank. In fact, all it takes is getting a little creative to completely spruce up your home.

Here, seven sneaky ways to redecorate your house ... without having to refinance it.

1. Rearrange your furniture. This, perhaps, is the best way to redecorate without spending a dime. And, I'm not just talking, "Oh, move that chair over there." I mean take the dresser that's in the kids' room, and put it in the hall. Take the rug from your bedroom, and move it into the living room. Take the shelves down from your kitchen, and hang them up in your kids' room. Taking pieces from different rooms, and mixing them up truly gives the feel of a makeover, as you're no longer staring at the same furniture in the same rooms.

2. Plants, plants, and more plants. Few things can breathe new life into a tired space like lush, leafy plants or even bright flowers. Farmers markets, among many other places, sell super affordable plants and flowers. Pick some up and try putting them in spaces you normally wouldn't think to -- like flowers on your nightstand, or a hanging plant in your bathroom. As far as home accessories go, it really doesn't get much prettier -- or cheaper.

3. Paint your picture frames. Over your picture frames? You know, the ones you've pretty much had since college? Paint 'em! It takes minutes to slap a coat of paint on a picture frame, and the result can be dramatic.

4. Add a mirror. Fact: Mirrors instantly make spaces seem bigger. Try positioning one opposite a window, as to give the illusion of more light and to give your place a super airy feel. It's the perfect mini-makeover for any room.

5. Frame and hang your kids' art. Kids truly are the best artists. With their bright colors and haphazard brush strokes, their pictures wind up looking like something you could find in a museum. The best part? Free art for your home! Your space will instantly brighten up with your little one's drawings on the walls -- and your child will love to see her work on display.

6. Change up your throw pillows. You want a new couch or chair for the corner, but don't have the funds -- what do you do? Buy a few new throw pillows! Adding throw pillows that are completely different from the ones you already have (and maybe a few blankets?) can instantly transform a piece of furniture.

7. Focus on the little things. If a throw pillow purchase isn’t even in the cards for you right now, try something small -- really small -- like a new dishtowel. It may sound silly, but who knows what it will inspire you to do? Maybe you'll hang it up on a new hook in your kitchen, and do something with the space where it was? A little can go a long way when it comes to making over your house -- and you won't know until you try it.

Great article- really appreciate the tips for people on a tight (to nonexistent) budget. I always check the dollar store for "the missing piece" for my decor- and I can buy it with the change picked up from the sidewalk.

Great tips, I've done them all before and continue to do them, and yes, it makes the house seem new again!
