Container Plant Ideas

Create small gardens in containers to enjoy fresh fruits, veggies and herbs.

Container gardening is a perfect first step for beginner gardeners and works in any size home. Start small with a few containers, and then add more with each growing season.

Container Inspiration
Use a variety of second-hand items for your container garden. This can include:

  • Old rain boots
  • A repurposed sink
  • A hollowed out log
  • A drawer from a dresser
  • A coffee can
  • A claw foot tub
  • An old barrel

Tip: Find fun, unique containers at salvage yards, thrift stores and garage sales.

What to Plant
Research and study what plants grow best in your climate before you begin. Match the appropriate plant to the size of the container. Here are a few suggestions for you to get started with:

  • Herbs: Mint, oregano, basil, chives, dill, parsley and rosemary do well in large containers. Plant tarragon and thyme in smaller containers.
  • Vegetables: Plant broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bush beans, cabbage, cauliflower, chard, tomatoes, onions, peppers, lettuce and even corn.
  • Fruit: Blueberries, raspberries, grapes and strawberries are perfect additions to container gardens.

Tip: Follow the guidelines for the appropriate amount of sun because containers can be quite heavy to move once the soil is in and your plants are growing.

Garden Care

  • Make sure containers have adequate drainage.
  • Check the soil frequently as container plants require frequent watering.
  • Place a thin layer of mulch on bare soil to help retain moisture.
  • Weed regularly to ensure your garden stays happy and healthy.

I have made a few plant containers made from used up car tires and have painted them from the outside. In these containers I have planted flowering plants and I must say the entire look of my garden has changed after this addition. Thank you for sharing the ideas, I will definitely try them out.
