DIY Remembrance Wreath

DIY Remembrance Wreath

Honor veterans by making this poppy wreath made from simple crafting supplies.

The red poppy has been used as a symbol of remembrance since the early 1920s. While it’s most common in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, it’s being adopted more and more in the United States.

So take some time this year and craft a remembrance wreath from a basic wreath form and household materials.

Tip: Traditionally these wreaths are displayed around Veterans Day in the United States or Remembrance Day around the world.

  1. Prepare the wreath form. If you're making your own, place a small bowl in the center of the paper plate and trace around it to create a circle. Using the craft knife, cut out the circle to leave a wreath shape. Keep the scrap to use in creating your poppy petal template
  2. Create the poppies. Start by drawing a 1.5-inch-wide circle on the scrap cut from the paper plate. Using scissors or a craft knife, cut out the circle
  3. Place the circle template on top of the crepe paper or napkin and trace lightly around it with a pencil. Cut out the petal with scissors. You will need 4 to 6 petals for each poppy (depending on how full you want the flower to be), so cutting multiple layers at once will save time
  4. Create the first poppy. Pick up one petal, pinch it in the center to create a more lifelike appearance, and then attach it to your wreath form with craft glue. Attach the remaining shapes in the same way, using the same center point and overlapping the shapes as you go. Repeat to add more poppies to your wreath form
  5. Let the flowers dry completely before gluing a black bead to each poppy center
  6. If desired, fill in any gaps on the wreath form with green cupcake liner leaves. Remove one liner from the package, pinch it in the center, and attach it to the wreath form with crafts glue. Repeat steps to create and add more leaves. Let the wreath dry completely before hanging
