Unique Touches for Your Home

Unique Touches for Your Home

These tips will help you add that unique touch that makes your house your home.

Your house is your refuge. It’s where you go to relax after a long workday has ended, your hub or center, your space in the world. You want it to reflect who you are, right?

Try one of these ideas out and let us know how it turned out.

Light gives your house personality and life. A fabulous chandelier over the dining room table creates a cozy and stunning environment. Add some lights underneath kitchen furniture and when the house is dark these lights will give it a special charm.

If you have pictures hanging on the walls, don’t forget to illuminate them as well with small accents of light.

The Entrance
Make your entrance welcoming. Make sure there aren’t things thrown about or accumulated so that when you open the door you can convey the warmth of your home.

Do you have a nice mirror, a comfortable rug or a space where you can place a small table and a beautiful plant? Great. You can also hang a miniature coat rack for your keys. Make it a family project; it is a very fun and creative activity. First, find hooks that you like, paint them your favorite colors and nail them to a sanded piece of wood. Then hang your keys. You can also hang art made by yourself or the family, or even place a nice family portrait by the door instead of a mirror.

Dress up your windows with colorful curtains. If you hang the curtains a few extra inches above the windows, you will obtain a more dramatic look, and the room will feel bigger.

Placing shelves to create “show off spots” for certain decorations is a great way to add personality to your home. Whether it is to show off a collection you have, photos or even your kid’s art projects, a well-made wood shelf can go a long way. Books are a great way to have a little bit of you in your home; after all, people identify with books, and this will create conversation between you and your guests when they love a book you’ve read. Books still have magic to them, and a home with books is always a welcoming one.

Architectural Accents
If you get the chance and have a handy friend, ask him/her to add some trim to the walls around the house or on the kitchen cabinets to dress them up. The moldings will give your home a classic and cozy feel, but if your house is modern, you probably do not want to go down this path.

Accent Wall
Contrast is also a nice way to add personality to your house, and you can do it all by yourself! It’s just a matter of choosing a wall and painting it a contrasting color to your other walls and furniture. If you have lighter walls, a dark gray wall or an earthy color would look fabulous. That being said, keep in mind not to have all of your walls be dark tones, because it will make your space seem smaller and darker.
