6 Bad Online Shopping Habits That Are Costing You Money

Avoid the bad online shopping habits that lead you to waste money rather than save it.

We all love online shopping, but some of those so-called money-saving habits aren't saving you anything at all. Here are six habits you need to stop for your budget's sake.

1. Looking for sales. Don't shop for what's on sale. Shop for what you need. If you spend time looking at websites that advertise big sales and deals, you're going to spend money you would have otherwise saved. Only glance at these sites when you already have a purchase in mind and you're trying to find the best price.

2. Saving your credit card on file. Make it harder to buy things online. When your card is saved on file, you can make purchases with one or two clicks. That doesn't give you enough time to sit back and consider whether you're making a smart buy. Getting your credit card out and holding it in your hand reminds you that you're spending real money.

3. Shopping to feel good. When you're feeling stressed out, don't browse online shops. Yes, it feels good to buy a new pair of shoes. But does it still feel good when your credit card statement arrives? Create new routines that help you work off your stress, like working out, taking a long bath, or calling a friend to vent.

4. Buying everything your friends recommend. You have amazing friends. We know. But like your mother always said, just because your friends are doing something doesn't mean you need to do it too. Don't click on that must-have item your friend has unless you're entirely sure you must have it as well.

5. Subscribing to store newsletters. Do you wake up every morning with an inbox full of retail newsletters? If so, you may be spending money recklessly. Those constant reminders of sales and goodies encourage you to shop when you could be saving. It's time to thoughtfully ditch some of those subscriptions. You can always re-subscribe when you actually need something and want to watch for it to go on sale.

6. Paying for shipping. Shopping online doesn't save you money if you're paying for shipping. Make a personal rule that you'll only shop online when shipping is free. This may mean shopping only during specials or using coupons, but it'll save you in the long run.
