Difficulty: Easy

(24) 2” x 2” x 24” lumber
Drill with a 1/4” bit
(4) Acrylic paint, colors of choice
40’ of 1/4” rope
(4) Paintbrushes
(4) Paint trays
Cup of water
Painter’s tape
Rubber gloves

  1. Two holes will need to be made in each piece of 2”x 2” x 24” lumber for the rope to be passed through in later steps. Use a ruler to measure 3” from the edge of a piece of lumber and mark with a pencil. Repeat on the opposite end of the lumber. Using a drill with a 1/4” bit, drill holes through the two pencil marks (See image below)

  1. Repeat Step 1 for all (24) 2” x 2” x 24” lumber (See image below)

  1. The 24 lumber pieces will be divided into 4 groups of 6. Each group will be painted a different color. Put on rubber gloves. Pour each of the four paints into their own tray. Add 1-part water to 5-parts of paint to thin out the paint and make it more like a stain. This will allow the natural grain of the wood to show through. Paint each of your lumber pieces and allow to dry for 2-4 hours before moving onto the next step (See images below)

  1. Lay out the different colored lumber in a pattern to your liking (See image below)

  1. Cut the rope in half. Wrap a small piece of painter’s tape around the end of one piece of rope to make a clean tip. This will stop the rope fraying when it’s passed through the holes in the lumber. Repeat on the second piece of rope (See image below)

  1. Tie a knot at the opposite end of the rope to the clean tip. Pass the tip of the rope through one hole in the lumber. Pull the rope through until it reaches the knot at the end of the rope. Repeat with the second piece of rope through the second hole (See images below)

  1. Tie a knot in each rope next to the lumber. Repeat Step 6 adding all the lumber and tying knots in the rope in between until all the pieces are together. Cut off any excess rope at the end of the last piece (See images below)
