DIY Cinderblock Bench

Use the Home Made Simple TV team’s instructions for making a show-stopping bench.

5 col

Create custom benches and a planter wall using simple stacked cinderblocks and a few pieces of wood. They can be configured in many ways to work in your own space.

Materials
(72) Double cinderblocks
(9) Single cinderblocks
(12) Cinder caps
(6) 4”x4”x76” Redwood boards
Rubber mallet
Gardening gloves
Assortment of succulents to fill the holes in the cinderblocks

Instructions

Note: The cinderblocks will be built up in five separate layers. No mortar is needed between the blocks, as their collective weight will hold them in place. Layer 1 is the foundation layer and should be placed against an existing wall for additional support. The configuration listed here will be 18’ by 8” long by 40” deep.

  1. For Layer 1 you will need (29) double cinderblocks and (2) Single cinderblocks. Follow the diagram below for placement of blocks on Layer 1, starting from left to right

Tip: Be sure to lift with your legs, not your back, when carrying cinderblocks.

  1. Each layer is color-coded. Use the previous layer as a guideline for placing the next layer. For layer 2 you will need (24) Double cinderblocks and (6) 4”x4”x76” Redwood boards. Follow the diagram below for Layer 2 placement of blocks on top of Layer 1 starting from left to right

Tip: Use a rubber mallet to tap into place any blocks that need a slight adjustment.

  1. Slide the Redwood lumber through the holes in the cinderblocks to make the bench
