Nail gun with 2” brad nails
(2) 12” clamp
Wood glue

Rubber mallet

Dry rag

Directions

PREPARING THE WOOD:

  1. In a well-ventilated area, apply wood stain on all sides of the lumber pieces using a dry rag to rub it in. Allow to dry before moving on to the next step
  1. Take the 1” x 2” x 16” lumber and mark along its length with a pencil centered at the following increments: 2”, 5”, 8”, 11”, 14”. Repeat on the second 1” x 2” x 16” lumber. These marks will be where the wood dowels are placed in later steps (See diagram below)

  1. Secure the 1” x 2” x 16” lumber to your work surface with two 12” clamps and the pencil marks from Step 2 facing upwards
  1. Using a drill with a 3/4” Forstner bit, make 5 holes along the 1” x 2” x 16” lumber at the pencil marks, no more than 1/2” deep. Do NOT drill all the way through (See image below)

  1. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 on the second piece of 1” x 2” x 16” lumber

ASSEMBLING THE RACK:

  1. Place the (2) 1” x 2” x 8” lumber and (2) 1” x 2” x 16” lumber together in a rectangle frame with the holes facing inwards. The larger pieces of lumber should be placed on the outside of the shorter lumber. Apply a line of wood glue to each of the four corners of the frame and secure in place using a nail gun with 2” brad nails (See image below)

7. Squeeze large beads of wood glue into the holes made in Steps 4 and 5. Take the five wood dowels and place them across the frame into the holes. Use a rubber mallet, if needed, to help shift the dowels into place (See images below)

8. Place the rack on top of the 1” x 16” x 9 1/2” lumber so all sides are aligned. The lumber will be used to mount the rack on the wall. Join the rack and 1” x 16” x 9 1/2” lumber together with two hinges placed on one 9 1/2” side. Make sure the hinges are attached so the frame can open up (See images below)

ATTACHING THE CHAINS AND CLASP:

  1. A 14” decorative chain needs to be added to each side of the rack so it opens to 90° once it’s mounted on the wall. Place one decorative chain on the side of the rack, just below the first dowel. Secure in place with a 1/2” wood screw using a drill with a Phillips head bit. Repeat on the opposite side of the rack (See images below)

10. Open up the rack to 90° and hold the free end of the decorative chain taut against the wall mount lumber. Secure the chain to the wall mount lumber with a 1/2” wood screw using a drill with a Phillips head bit. Repeat on the opposite side of the rack (See images below)

11. A hook-and-eye clasp needs to be added to one side of the rack so it can be stowed closed when not in use. Twist the hook into the side of the rack just below the second dowel. Use pliers if needs be to get a firm grip on the hook to twist it into the wood (See image below)

12. Close the rack. Position the eye on the wall mount lumber so it lines up with the hook already attached to the rack. The hook needs to be able to slot into the eye. Once it’s in place, twist the eye into the side of the wall mount. Use pliers if needs be to get a firm grip on the eye to twist it into the wood (See image below)

MOUNTING THE RACK TO THE WALL:

  1. Drill four pilot holes into each corner of the wall mount lumber using a 1/8” bit. Position the wall mount against the wall and secure in place with 2” drywall screws using a drill with a Phillips head bit (See image below)
