DIY Ice Dyed Pillows

Design your own ice dyed pillows to bring a pop of color to any room in your home.

Materials
(4) Pillows
(4) Pillowcases
Dry dye (One each. Use powder instead of liquid.)

  • Aqua
  • Violet
  • Bright Red
  • Sunshine
  • Lime Green
  • Orange
  • Purple

(4) Gallons of water in bucket
(4) Packs of soda ash (can purchase from any craft store)
Stir stick
Metal rack
(3) Bags of ice

Instructions

1. Remove the pre-washed pillowcases from the pillows

2. Put on the gloves and mix the soda ash and water. You will have 1 pack of soda ash for every one gallon of water. Mix together with the stir stick

3. Put all four pillow covers in the soda ash/water mixture bucket and let sit for 15-20 minutes. The soda ash/water mixture helps the dye take to the fabric easier, allowing the dye to be more stable

4. After 15-20 minutes, take the pillowcases out of the soda ash/water bucket, scrunch them up like cinnamon buns, and place on the rack

5. Envelop and pile all of the ice around the pillowcases, until they are completely covered. Let them sit for 10 minutes

6. Add and layer all seven packets of dye to the ice/pillowcases

7. Once all packets of dye are added, let it sit until the ice melts organically. The dye mixes into the fabric as the ice melts

8. When all the ice melts, toss the four pillowcases into the washing machine, and wash in cold water and no detergent. Hang until dry

9. Put the newly dyed pillowcases on the pillows
