Difficulty: Intermediate

Materials (for shelves)
(2) 72” x 12” shelves (or size of your choice)
(6) 11” x 14” shelf brackets (sized to fit shelves of your choice)
Small box 3” screws to work with your walls
Small box 2” heavy-duty self-tapping drywall anchors (if your walls are drywall)
Small box 1/2” wood screws
Drill with a 1/8” bit and Phillips head bit
Tape measure
12” level
Pencil

Instructions (for shelves)

ATTACHING THE SHELF BRACKETS:

1. Measure the width of the wall where the shelves will hang and mark the center point with a pencil. Measure 42” up the wall from the floor at the center point or high enough to leave at least 12”-14” clearance above the top of the washer and dryer. Mark with a pencil. This will be the position of the center shelf bracket

2. Hold the 14” side of a shelf bracket up to the wall with the top of it flush with the pencil mark from Step 1. Rest a 12” level on top of the bracket and flush with the wall to check the bracket is straight. Mark the wall through the screw holes in the bracket with a pencil and set the bracket to one side

3. Using a drill with a 1/8”, drill pilot holes into the wall through the pencil marks. If the drill gives some resistance it means you’ve hit a wall stud and no wall anchors are needed. If not, use a drill with a Phillips head bit to screw 1 1/2” self-tapping wall anchors into the pilot holes. Hold the shelf bracket back up to the wall aligned over the wall anchors and secure in place using a drill with a Phillips head bit and 3” wall screws

4. To add two additional shelf brackets, measure 32” either side of the center bracket and mark with a pencil. This will allow for 3” of shelf overhang over the side shelf brackets once the shelf is attached. Measure from the floor up to each pencil mark to make sure they are each at 42” or the same height as the center bracket

5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to add additional shelf brackets using the pencil marks from Step 4 as a guide for placement

6. To add brackets for a second shelf above the first shelf, measure at least 14”-16” up from the first set of brackets to leave enough space between the shelves once they’re added. Repeat Steps 1 to 6 to attach the second shelf brackets above the first set with the exception of Step 1 where you will measure at least 56”-58” up from the floor instead of 42”

ATTACHING THE SHELVES:

7. Center the lower shelf over the brackets making sure there is even overhang on both sides and the back of the shelf is flush with the wall. Using a drill with a Phillips head bit, secure the shelf to the brackets using 1/2” wood screws through the brackets and into the underside of the shelf. Repeat to attach the top shelf

Instructions (for foldaway folding station)

CONNECTING THE 1” X 8” X 32” LUMBER AND 1” X 2” X 30” LUMBER:

Refer to the image below for completing Steps 1 to 3.

1. Lay the 1” x 8” x 32” lumber on the work surface with the prettiest side of the wood face down. Place a 2” hinge in the bottom left corner of the lumber so it’s flush with the top and side edges and the hinge opens towards the 8” side of the lumber. Secure the hinge to the lumber using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3/4” wood screws

2. A 1” x 2” x 30” leg will be added to the lumber from Step 1 that will fold away when not in use. To attach the leg, lay the 1” x 2” x 30” on the 1” x 8” x 32” lumber with the end of it flush with the open hinge from Step 1 and flush with the 32” side edge. Secure the 1” x 2” x 30” to the open side of the hinge using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3/4” wood screws

3. Place (2) 2” hinges about 3” apart on the right side of 1” x 8” x 32” with the hinged edges flush with the edge of the wood. Secure the hinges in place using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3/4” wood screws per hinge

ATTACHING THE FOLDING STATION TO THE WALL:

Refer to the image below for completing Steps 4 and 5.

4. To mount the folding station a 2” x 4” x 12” wood ledger must first be attached to the wall. Measure 30” from the floor up the wall and mark with a pencil. This will be the height of the top of the ledger and the same height as the leg from Step 2. Center the 1” x 4” x 12” wood ledger against the wall with the top of the 12” side flush with the pencil mark. Check with a 12” level it’s straight. Secure the ledger to the wall using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3” wall screws spaced across its width

5. Rest the folding station from Step 3 on top of the ledger with the hinges overlapping the side of the ledger. Secure the hinges to the ledger using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3/4” wood screws per hinge. The folding station will now be able to fold out to use and folded back against the wall to stow it
