Directions

ATTACHING THE VERTICAL REDWOOD LUMBER* SUPPORTS:

*Redwood lumber is used for this outdoors project because it ages nicely, weathers well and doesn’t rot.

  1. (4) 2” x 4” x 10’ redwood lumber will be vertically attached to the house eaves as the support for the planters in later steps. They will be spaced 20” apart. Measure 60” along the wall where the wall garden is going to hang. Mark on the wall with a pencil at 0”, 20”, 40” and 60”. This will be the placements of the 4 vertical supports
  1. Hold the first 2” x 4” x 10’ redwood lumber centered over the 0” pencil mark so the top is resting on the eaves and the bottom is on the ground. Check with a 12” level the lumber is vertically straight. Secure the lumber to the eaves using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 3” exterior screws in a triangular formation for extra strength (See images below)

  1. Repeat Step 2 for adding the additional 3 vertical lumber supports at 20”, 40” and 60” (See images below)

ATTACHING THE HORIZONTAL REDWOOD LUMBER BASE:

  1. (2) 2” x 4” x 65” redwood lumber with 45° mitered corners will be attached to the bottom of the vertical lumber supports to create a base. Place one 2” x 4” x 65” redwood lumber behind the 4 vertical lumber supports and flush with the ground. Check with a 12” level it is straight and evenly spaced at each end. Secure the 2” x 4” x 65” lumber to the 4 vertical lumber supports using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (2) 3” exterior screws per vertical support (See images below)

  1. Place the second 2” x 4” x 65” redwood lumber in front of the 4 vertical lumber supports and level with the back base from Step 4. Secure the 2” x 4” x 65” lumber to the 4 vertical lumber supports using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (2) 3” exterior screws per vertical support (See images below)

ATTACHING THE PLANTERS:

  1. 8 planters will be attached to the 4 vertical supports in a configuration of your choice. Center a planter over 2 vertical supports in a location of your choosing. Check with a 12” level the planter is straight. Secure the planter to the 2 vertical supports using a drill with a Phillips head bit and (3) 2” exterior screws per side (See images below)

  1. Repeat Step 6 for adding the remaining 7 planters to the 4 vertical supports (See image below)

ADDING THE HERBS AND VEGETABLES:

  1. Put on gardening gloves. Place your herbs, vegetables and fruit still in their plastic containers into the planters. This is so you can rearrange where they are placed (See image below)

Expert Tip: Place tomatoes in the bottom planters since they will grow upwards, place strawberries in the top planters since they will hang down.

  1. Once you’re happy with the configuration of the plants, remove each of them from their containers and plant them in the planters. Loosen the roots of each plant before placing them in the planters. Use extra potting soil to cover all the roots (See images below)

ADDING THE DECORATIVE LANTERNS:

  1. Decide where you would like to hang your lanterns. Screw a self-tapping hook into the vertical support with your hand where you would like the lantern to hang. Hang the lantern on it. Repeat for the second lantern (See images below)
