How to Rejuvenate Old Doors

Use carpenter David Leon’s simple instructions to breathe new life into doors.

This project shows you an easy way to rejuvenate and distinguish your doors with a unique decoration using wood trim and geometric shapes.

Materials:
Pre-cut Wood:
(12) 20 1/2-inch pieces of 1” by 1” wood cut at 45-degree angle at both ends
(12) 23 3/4-inch pieces of Base cap molding cut at 45-degree angle at both ends
(4) 8-inch pieces of Base cap molding cut at 45-degree angle at both ends
(4) 5 3/4-inch pieces of 1” by 1” wood cut at 45-degree angle at both ends
(2) 1-inch thick wood circles with 17 3/4-inch diameter with rounded edges
Paint rollers
Paint bin
Painter’s tape
Paintbrush
Hammer
Interior/Exterior hi-gloss enamel paint with primer
Wood glue
Safety glasses
Hammer
1 1/4-inch 18-gauge nails
Pencil

Instructions

  1. Remove your simple closet doors from hinges. Lay the door flat on your workspace
  2. Remove hardware from the door using a screwdriver, including the three door hinges. Save this hardware, as you will need it to reinstall door later
  3. Take pre-cut 1” by 1” wood and base cap molding (see sizing in materials for featured door). Also, be sure to have the ends cut at 45-degree angles
  4. Be sure to lay out the pre-cut wood on door before attaching and outline with a pencil. (Picture below is featured pattern). Ensure all pieces line up correctly and fit together nicely. Trim wood for adjustments as needed

Tip: For a professional look, be sure all wood grain goes in the same direction as the door.

  1. To attach, use a base of wood glue on the door according to your desired layout and pencil marks, then place the wood, and finish by nailing the pieces in with hammer and nails
  2. Paint the door and new designs with paintbrush and roller. Allow paint to dry
  3. Re-attach hardware, hinges and doorknob, to door using screwdriver and saved hardware
  4. Reinstall doors by having a friend hold the door up in the doorway and aligning the hinges while you gently hammer the pins back through each hinge
