Pipe Shelving and Desk

Pipe Shelving and Desk

Use carpenter Amy Devers instructions to custom build a creative storage desk from piping.

This project joins plumbing pipes together with reclaimed wood boards to create a shelving unit.

4” by 4” Scrap wood (Maybe needed for leveling the floor – depth will vary)

Steps:
Building the frame: See diagram below as a guide for Steps 1 to 3:

  1. Take five pipes, (2) 12” (1) 24” (1) 18” (1) 8” and screw them together in a row in the following order: 12” to 12” to 24” to 18” to 8” using tee brackets as connectors
  2. Screw a flange onto the end of the 12-inch pipe and an elbow bracket onto the end of the 8-inch pipe
  3. Take another five 12-inch pipes and screw flanges onto one end of each of them. Screw the other ends into each of the tee brackets and one elbow bracket. See image below:

  1. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to make a second frame. The two completed frames will be used on each end of your shelving unit

Building the inner frame: See diagram below as a guide for Steps 5 to 9:

  1. Take six pipes, (1) 12” (1) 8” (1) 4” (1) 24” (1) 18”, and screw them together in a row in the following order: 12” to 8” to 4” to 24” to 18” to 8” using tee brackets as connectors
  2. Screw a flange onto the 12-inch pipe end and an elbow bracket onto the 8-inch pipe end
  3. Take five 12-inch pipes and screw a flange onto one end of each of them. Screw the other ends into each of the tee brackets with the exception of the tee bracket between the 4-inch pipe and 8-inch pipe plus one 12-inch pipe into the elbow bracket
  4. Take one 12-inch pipe and screw an elbow bracket into one end. Screw a flange into the elbow bracket then screw the other end of the 12-inch pipe into the tee bracket between the 4-inch pipe and the 8-inch pipe. This will create the frame where the desk will be supported
  5. Repeat Steps 5 to 8 to make a second inner frame. The two completed frames will be used in the middle of your shelving unit

Attaching the frames to the wall and floor:

  1. Measure 9 feet along the wall where the shelving is going to live. Mark the ground with a marker at 0, 3, 6 and 9 feet. These four marks are where the frames will be placed.
  2. Take a level and lay it on the floor between the marks. If the floor is level you are ready to start anchoring the frames in place. If not, you will need to build up the floor with layered 4” by 4” scrap wood on the markers until the tops of the scrap wood are level with the highest part of the floor. See image below:

  1. Once the floor is level, take an outer frame and place the bottom flange on the 0 foot floor mark. All of the side arm flanges should be touching the wall. Use a level to make sure the frame is perpendicular to the floor. Mark the wall and the floor through every flange hole and set the frame to one side
  2. Using a hammer drill, specific to drilling concrete, drill holes in each flange mark on the floor and wall to a depth of 2 1/2 inches.
  3. Place the outer frame back in place, lining up the flanges with the pre-drilled holes. Use a drill with a Phillips head drill bit to drill 3-inch Phillips flat head concrete screws through the flanges and into the wall and floor
  4. Repeat Steps 12 to 14 for attaching the outer frame and two inner frames to the wall and floor

ADDING THE SHELVING:

  1. Place one 9’ by 4” board across the second from top pipes and the second 9’ by 4” board across the pipes on the fourth level down. There will be an overhang of 2 inches at the end of each shelf
  2. Lay a 40-inch board across the bottom pipes between the edge frame and inner frame on each side. Lay a second pair of 40-inch boards across the pipes two above the previously laid bottom shelves
  3. Snap pipe straps onto the pipes under each shelf. There will be two per pipe to secure the shelf to the frame. Use a Phillips head screwdriver or drill bit to and 1/2-inch pan head screws to anchor the pipe straps to the shelving. See image below:

Adding the desk:

  1. To make your desktop, take the 20” by 44” piece of reclaimed wood and mark with a pencil a 5-inch square on a corner edge. On the opposite corner along the 44-inch side, mark a second 5-inch square. Use a handsaw to remove the squares from the desk. These spaces will allow the desk to fit onto the pipe frame without pipes getting in the way. See diagram below:

  1. Flip the desk over and mark 6 1/2 inches in from each 20-inch side edge, then mark 1-inch up from the 44-inch side. This will be how far in each desk support will be placed. Take the first desk support and line it up on the 6 1/2-inch mark and the 1-inch mark. The desk support should now be protruding 9-inch beyond the opposite edge of the desktop. Carefully drill four 1 1/2-inch pan head screws through each desk support and into the desk to hold them in place. See diagram below:

  1. Flip the desk back over so the desk supports are now on the underside of the desktop. Rest the desktop on the protruding pipe arms and flanges on the inner two frames. The desk supports should be slid underneath the shelving in the back. Drill two 1 1/2-inch pan head screws through each support and into the shelving to anchor them together. Drill four 1/2-inch pan head screws through each desk flange to firmly secure the front of the desk in place
