Washi Tape Wallpaper

Use Designer Kim Myles’ instructions to make a cool wall design with Washi tape.

5 col

This project uses a special kind of Japanese tape to create a unique wall design for any space!

3/4-inch shear Washi tape in desired color(s)
1-inch painter’s tape
Paper towels
Spray cleaner

  1. Clean off any dust on wall using paper towels and spray cleaner
  2. Figure out a design you like and want to apply to your wall. Remember simplicity really goes a long way here

For this project, we made a 5-color stripe pattern along the walls.

  1. Have a buddy hold level on wall to ensure a straight line while you apply Washi tape along the level carefully. Use ladder for hard to reach areas
  2. Cut Washi tape with scissors when you reach a corner or when you would like to stop
  3. Ensure tape is adhered to wall by going back over line and pushing down with fingers
  4. Apply painter’s tape to the right side, along the edge of Washi tape to create a 1-inch spacer and guide. Ensure painter’s tape is not touching Washi tape because you will be pulling it off later
  5. Apply next color of Washi tape along the right edge of the painter’s tape. Again, be careful not to go over any of the painter’s tape as it will be pulled off later

  1. To make corners with the Washi tape, just place the beginning of Washi tape directly on top of the end you cut with scissors and move in new direction
  2. Carefully pull off painter’s tape and you’ll be left with your 5-color stripe pattern of Washi tape
