All too often, we think of healthy living as getting that workout in or following a strict diet. But being well is about so much more -- and keeping up with healthy habits is actually a lot easier than you might think, even when you’re a busy mom! Here, 10 truly healthy mothers divulge the easy, day-to-day things they do to keep their wellness firing on all cylinders.

1. Drink lots of H2O. Making sure to get your 8+ glasses of water in a day can be challenging, but it’s essential to hydration -- and so much more. As one mom puts it, “Being well-hydrated aids in raising my metabolism and helps me maintain my fitness. It also helps keep hunger pangs at bay and gives me more energy.”

2. Keep a gratitude journal. Maintaining a positive attitude is a boon for your mind and body, but it can also be challenging. For that reason, healthy moms suggest keeping a gratitude journal. Simply writing down what you’re thankful for can lead to better sleep, fewer symptoms of illness, and more happiness, according to psychology researchers.

3. Shoot for a good night’s rest. Depending on how old your kids are, this one can be especially challenging, but prioritizing sleep -- preferably 7-8 hours straight -- offers numerous benefits. As one healthy mom explained, getting to bed by 10:30 p.m. and waking up early helps her body function optimally and helps her stay on track with her wellness goals.

4. Allow yourself to indulge. Sure, sugar in excess throws a wrench in overall health, but being too restrictive can backfire. For that reason, the healthiest moms report allowing themselves to indulge. Maybe for you, it’s a daily dose of dark chocolate or a tablespoon of peanut butter. Either may seem, on the surface, a “guilty” pleasure, but there are benefits -- both mental and physical -- of the pleasurable experience.

5. Prioritize your to-do list. We all have a gazillion things to accomplish in any given day, but narrowing down your to-do list to the top 3 essential tasks can make you feel accomplished, organized, and peaceful. “It’s doable and not overwhelming,” explains one mom who swears by the practice and says it has helped her keep perfectionism at bay.

6. Take time-outs for your relationship. As one fit mom put it, working with her husband to keep their marriage strong boosts her overall vitality. “We do date night and make sure we spend time together after the kids are in bed,” she explains.

7. Veg out. With a new fad diet trying to command our attention everywhere we turn, it can be hard to pinpoint the ideal way to eat for your particular wellness goals. But there’s one constant for us all, and that’s vegetables. The healthiest moms report making a point to eat at least 5 servings a day and cover their bases by packing salads or chopping up veggies ahead of time after stocking up at the grocery store or local farmer’s market.

8. Embrace prep time. Whether its scheduling time for a workout, as if each is a doctor’s appointment, or planning to spend an hour on preparing lean proteins and vegetables for the week ahead, the healthiest moms swear by “prep time.” The smart move not only sets you up to more easily stick to your healthy habits throughout the week, but it preempts stress to promote peace of mind!

9. Set yourself up to win. Keeping healthy snacks (like fruit, nuts, or high-protein Greek yogurt) handy is a must for moms who are always on the go. By making sure that these satiating foods are always available, you can easily stave off hunger and steer clear of junk food fixes.

10. Build in “me” time. The healthiest moms swear by solo time. Whether you’re getting a quickie manicure or going to yoga once a week, making a point to build in time to take care of yourself makes it easier for you to be on your A-game – mentally, emotionally, and physically.
