5 Tips to Stay Healthy on Vacation

Relaxing on vacation is a given, but staying in good health helps you enjoy it even more.



After working off all the heavy and hearty foods we eat during the winter, you might feel like you owe yourself a little wiggle room when it comes to your general diet. It’s important to note, however, that any break we take from our regular, healthy routines can have an impact.

If you plan on getting away from it all on a vacation soon, here are a few tips to keep yourself fit and energetic throughout the entire trip.

1. Don’t Overeat
We tend to take a vacation from everything when we’re out. Although you’ll see people with plates filled with food, fight the urge to overeat.

Take your time on your food and eat the must-have delicacies of the area, but don’t try to fit it all into one night! Even if you were to take a spoonful of each dish, it’d be impossible to have everything.

Also, try your best to stick to the regular meal progressions (don’t stop at every homemade fudge or candy shops that you’ll inevitably get a whiff of before you even see). When you eat sweets on an empty stomach, your blood sugar levels rise — which causes it to fall just as fast, leaving you hungry again. To avoid this, always start eating your soup, salad, meats and other foods with a low glycemic index value. Later, if you’re still hungry you can have some dessert (and a smaller portion than you’d have if you ate sweets for one of your meals).

2. Drink Plenty Of Water
Water hydrates you, sure, but did you know it also saves you from unneeded snacking? If you aim for drinking about half or 2/3 of your body weight in ounces of water, you should always have a good, round number to aim for in terms of intake. Water helps you feel full, which, of course, suppresses hunger.

3. Skip the Hotels
Large chain hotels are the first choice for those traveling with children. But since you’ll most likely just be traveling with two (or one!), choose a locally owned bed and breakfast or inn. Search out for places that make efforts to use local food from a farmers market or green grocer. You might be surprised at how healthy and nutritious their menus are.

4. Keep Active
One of the most common mistakes during vacation is suddenly cutting out our exercise. A one-hour walk will not only help you burn an extra 450-500 calories in the evening, it can also help tire you out for the night and let you end the day on a happy note.

In the mornings, before breakfast, take a walk with your partner with a water bottle in-hand. You’ll be working from a caloric deficit and the feeling of accomplishment you get will follow you throughout the day.

5. Snack Nutritiously
Don't snack on calorie-loaded foods like ice cream and pastries between meals! Choose healthier options like hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds. The fiber in nuts can help you stay full longer and give you energy, too.
