You may have heard that essential oils can cure everything from strep throat to depression. Don't let those wild claims turn you off. Essential oils aren't miracle cures, but they have amazing uses around the house and they smell wonderful. Embrace a little bit of nature in the way you clean and live. And, of course, they’re far more than fragrance. These six oils are great for cleaning, mood-boosting, and overall wellbeing.

1. Lavender oil. Just one drop of pure lavender oil in your bath will fill your entire bathroom with the calming aroma. It's an easy way to create a spa experience. Try using unscented bubbles for a totally indulgent soak. The chemistry of pure lavender essential oil has been shown to have calming properties. Try adding it to a diffuser in your home office to reduce stress.

2. Tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is nature's antiseptic. It has a pungent, medicinal smell. Keep it in your medicine cabinet for spot treatments on stubborn blemishes or small scrapes. Just dab a very small amount on your skin with a cotton swab. Add 20 drops of tea tree oil to a small spray bottle of water for a natural yoga mat cleaner.

3. Lemon oil. Nothing tops lemon oil when it comes to deodorizing your home. Keep a bottle near your trashcan and add a few drops every time you change the bag. Add a few drops to your sponge when you clean countertops and cutting boards. It has a bright, clean scent that's especially comforting in the winter. Just wash your hands thoroughly after use as you would with any household cleaner.

4. Peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is a seriously strong oil. Just one drop goes a long way. Some people swear by it as a headache remedy. Try mixing one drop with a dime-sized amount of coconut oil and rubbing it on the back of your neck at the onset of a headache. It's also a great oil to sniff when you're feeling nauseated. Add a few drops to a cotton ball and wave it under your nose.

5. Spruce oil. Love the smell of the holidays? You can enjoy that piney scent all year long with spruce essential oil. Add 20 drops to a small spray bottle of water for a bathroom deodorizer and surface cleaner.

6. Orange oil. There's nothing like the sweet, vibrant scent of a fresh orange. Orange essential oil smells like distilled happiness. That may be why it's such a mood lifter. Diffuse it in your home to spread cheerfulness, especially when the weather is gray. It'll put a smile on your face.
