Health 101: Back To Basics

Sometimes we all need a little reminder about the fundamentals. Here are some simple steps to for healthy living.

Staying healthy is a constant struggle, especially when dealing with a busy schedule. It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to go to extremes and do things you don’t like to improve your physical and mental health. Remembering these few simple tips will make it easier for you to stay healthy and happy.

Small Changes, Big Results
A good idea to start improving your health is to go slow. Habits should be changed gradually and in increments. Doing otherwise will certainly become overwhelming. Take your time to adapt to a new exercise routine or to new eating habits. Remember that small steps mean big progress over time.

Eat Better
Eating healthy doesn’t mean you must include tasteless and boring food into your diet. There are many exciting ideas and recipes for nutritious eating that don’t sacrifice on taste. Look for small changes you can make when cooking. For example, use brown sugar instead of regular sugar, or use olive oil instead of canola. Avoid frying meat or potatoes, but rather steam or bake them. Finally, don’t forget to always eat in moderation.

Keep Moving
Going to a gym and spending hours in a repetitive training routine isn’t the only way to keep fit. Exercise can be an enjoyable and fun activity that keeps you motivated and happy. Although we may not have much time to exercise in our day to day, there’s always a way if there’s a will. Use your bike instead of the car when you travel short distances. Stretching your legs, and doing 25 jumping jacks a day, can do wonders. There are thousands of ways to activate the heart and muscles – like walking, practicing sports and even dancing. Choose what you like most and don’t let anything stop you.

Be Around People Who Bring You Up
The circle of friends we hang out with can motivate us or take away our energy. Oftentimes, there’s always that one person who seems to drain the life out of us. We know who she or he is, and there’s no use in being restless and annoyed all the time. Stress and anxiety may affect our health adversely So it’s important to foster those friends who have a more positive and productive outlook.

Embrace Yourself
Maintaining a home is not an easy task; and as Latinas, we are very homey and we love pampering our families. We work, cook dinner, clean the house, do the laundry and take care of the children. At the end of the day you only have time to sleep. We never seem to have time to do those things that make us feel good. It is easy to lose track of where we are if we try to keep track of our fast paced modern life. However, it is always important to stop, breathe and relax. Pamper yourself and clear your mind treating yourself to a spa or going out with las amigas. It is in the small things where we can find what makes us feel good about ourselves. It is also important to have a good night’s sleep everyday. Try to sleep eight hours a day. It is also advisable to turn off the phone before bedtime. Disconnecting from the world is now considered a luxury. Take time to enjoy a quiet evening without the noise of technology.
