Put a Summer Spin On Workouts

If you’re not seeing the results you want from your workouts, try this one easy tip!


You’ll already be getting out and about this summer – so here’s your chance to turn that family trip to the pool, or that hike into the woods, into an extra workout.

Intervals

The best, easiest and most affordable way to work in a workout is to add an interval element to them. Intervals may seem intimidating, but really all it means is that you increase either your intensity or speed for a certain length of time.

Swimming

For your first lap, go as powerfully or as fast as you can, then go back to throwing the football around or having chicken fights.

Another idea is to try treading water. For 30 seconds raise your arms above your head and tread powerfully, then simply wade or float for the next two minutes. Continue this pattern off and on. You can keep track of time with an inexpensive waterproof watch.

Hiking

As you’re hiking, try speeding up on a certain hill and slowing down on the descent. Or, if the hike is a steady climb, you could simply hike faster for a minute or two, and then slow down the pace for the next few. Hikes are basically like intervals already, especially if they include rolling hills. (Hikes are generally up and down by nature, which makes them a super effective workout!)

If you’re with your family, run ahead of them for 60 seconds, then walk back toward them as they catch up at their own pace.

Running

Running is one of the best and easiest ways to add intervals. For running, you might need an interval timer (there are many smart phones apps that are convenient), but if you’re on flat ground you could basically sprint for an amount of time (say 15-30 seconds) and then jog for up to a minute or two. The key is to change the time often just to shake up the workouts.
