10 Super Simple Tricks for Eating Healthier

Try these easy and effective ways to give your healthy eating routine a boost.

As much as we all aspire to eat healthier, making a concerted effort to do it can feel like a daunting, pricey, time-consuming task. Visions of diet restrictions and menu plans can be so overwhelming that you just throw up your hands. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Here are 10 simple, effective, and -- most importantly! -- easy ways to get your healthy eating routine on track.

1. Chop it up. When we’re tired, we often skip fruits and veggies that require several extra steps of prep work, like washing or chopping. Setting aside time to do exactly that can set you up for a win. Chop up fruits and veggies (like apples, bell peppers, carrots, and melon) on a Sunday or whichever day works best for you, and you’ll be all set to grab healthy snacks throughout the rest of the week.

2. Try a smoothie or a juice. Toss a bunch of good-for-you ingredients (think chia seeds, a high-quality protein powder, nut butter, frozen fruits) into the blender, hit a button, and in a minute, you’ll have a powered-up snack or meal. This can also be a great way to beat boredom because there’s always a new combination of goodies (veggie smoothies, veggies with fruits, coconut water vs. milk, etc.) you can experiment with.

3. Bake breakfast in bulk. So many of us forget to eat breakfast or aren’t even keen on it because it feels impossible to add into the list of to-dos we’re already juggling every morning. That’s why making your breakfast ahead of time can be the perfect solution. Whether you make fiber-filled, steel-cut oats in a slow cooker or protein-packed mini frittatas in a muffin pan, bulk breakfasts can go a long way to keeping you satiated every day of the week.

4. Skip sugar, sub in fruit. If you’re trying to avoid refined sweeteners, you can opt for dates in smoothies or baked goods. Fruit also works well as an alternative to syrup on pancakes and waffles. And on its own, naturally sweet fruit (like strawberries, nectarines, or watermelon) can be a handy, healthier way to get your sweet tooth fix.

5. Add avocado. Sometimes your average turkey sandwich, salad, or even taco dinner needs a little something more. Instead of reaching for mayo, creamy dressings, or sour cream, use a bit of avocado, which packs filling, heart-healthy unsaturated fat and a lot of creamy punch.

6. Sip your caffeine without add-ins. Finding a tea and/or coffee that you enjoy on its own, without added cream or sugar, is actually easier than it sounds. From naturally flavored coffees to teas made from vanilla beans or cardamom pods, there are plenty of ways to get your favorite caffeine fix in a flavorful, yet calorie-free way.

7. Try using “hand”-y work. Portion control is essential for any healthy eating regimen, but no one wants to tote around measuring cups or spoons, especially when you’re eating out! Thankfully, your hand can serve as an on-to-go way to measure out the proper portion of anything from nuts to meat.
