5 Healthy Juice Drinks the Entire Family Will Enjoy

Pitch the sports drinks and mix up one of these thirst-quenching beverages instead!

The next time your kids clamor for sugar-sweetened soft drinks, reach for juices squeezed from the actual fruits! Not only will you get natural sweetness directly from the source, juices can be turned fizzy with splashes of carbonated soda water.

Countless combinations — from peach and ginger, to melon and mint — offer flavorful drinks that refresh and revitalize.

Nutritional values abound in fruit. You’ll find loads of Vitamin C in citrus, Vitamin A in mangos and antioxidants in berries. Your kids can also boost their immune systems by drinking their daily dose of fruits.

Though eating whole fruit provides more fiber, fruit juice may activate enzymes and co-enzymes, so include the pulp. Try any of the following recipes for a drink that satisfies your body and your thirst.

1. Melon Agua Frescas
This Mexican beverage, meaning “fresh water,” gives you the flavor and refreshing quality of melons in a beverage.

  1. In a blender, mix seedless watermelon with water for a rehydrating and naturally sweet drink
  2. Add a sprig of mint and a squeeze of lime
  3. Fill the glass with chunks of chilled honeydew and cantaloupe instead of ice cubes for a colorful mélange
  4. Sparkling water turns it fizzy and frozen cubes of melon make it a pretty pink slushie

2. Tropical Treat
Bring a beach vacation to your glass with slices of mango, pineapple, papaya and kiwi blended with a dash of grated ginger and a splash of lime.

Reach out and add other tropical fruits like guava, passion fruit and star fruit, too. Dilute with real coconut water without added sugar — a great source of rehydrating electrolytes — and top it with a sprinkle of shaved coconut for a truly beach-worthy beverage.

3. Berry Delicious
Blend up any mix of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries — frozen berries work well, too — for a delectable drink of antioxidants. Create a favorite blend such as red berries and add whole floating blueberries for contrasting color for a pretty, healthy and tasty party punch.

4. Citrus-ade
Freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juices together results in a beverage with a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Kumquats or lemon add another tangy touch. Packed with Vitamin C, a slice of lime perched on the edge of the glass makes a great garnish.

5. Peaches and Fig Frothy
Seasonal pitted fruits like peaches, plums and nectarines make a rich, juicy beverage and deliver Vitamin A, potassium, calcium and iron. Blend them with water and add a fruit slice or berries to each glass for a summery treat from the orchard.

Adding a fig offers complexity. Figs can be turned into a creamy smoothie with nut milk or plain low-fat yogurt — and it’s as good as a dessert. Sprinkle on some pomegranate seeds for a presentation that will wow your guests.
