My Simple Secret to Losing Weight and Keeping It Off

My Simple Secret to Losing Weight and Keeping It Off

One mom reveals her secret to finally losing the baby weight for good.

When I was pregnant with my first child almost nine years ago, I gained the most weight ever in my life. The day I walked into the hospital in labor with him, I had topped a number on the scale I never, ever thought I would reach, and it was all because I assumed pregnancy was a free pass to eat whatever I wanted. Hey, I was eating for two! That meant double the food, right?

I managed to lose a little weight between pregnancies, and I realized that if I kept eating nothing but junk every time I was expecting, I’d be in trouble. But, even after child no. 4 was born, I had baby weight leftover from that first pregnancy.

When I could no longer recognize myself in pictures and cringed whenever I saw myself holding one of my adorable children, I knew I had to change. I didn’t want to just accept that I’d be overweight because I was a mom of four. I wanted to be healthy and make people ask, “Wow, you have four kids?!”

The first thing I did was start tracking my food intake. I had been pregnant or nursing for the better part of six years, and my portion sizes were out of control. Even though I had stopped eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, I was still eating way too much. So I decided to download a free food-tracking app on my phone.

In the beginning, all I could think about was food. Just like with dieting, I was always thinking about the next meal and how hungry I was (even if I really wasn’t hungry at all). My body adjusted pretty quickly, though, and I learned which foods would keep me full longer without sending me over my calorie limit before noon.

It became a habit to log in and enter my meals, and some days, I was excited to enter lunch and dinner early, and even more excited to eat it later, because I found healthy foods that I actually liked. Instead of obsessing about the foods I couldn’t eat, I began looking forward to the foods I could eat. Plus, it was always a bonus if I stayed within my daily goal or even left room for a treat before bed.

After consistently tracking my food intake and adding in some exercise, I quickly began to lose the weight and ended up below my pre-pregnancy weight, feeling better than ever. I don’t always track my food now, but when my clothes start feeling a little tight or I start feeling out of control, I get on my phone, log in, and get back on the right track.
