Dog-tired? Here are 5 habits to get you back on your feet (or paws)

You’ve earned the right to be tired, that’s for sure, but you can avoid it (a little, at least) with these 5 tips.

The kind of tired where you realize you’ve been accidently watching cartoons by yourself 30 minutes after the kids are in bed.

The kind of tired coffee can’t fix.

The kind of tired where you just want to plop down on your bed or the couch and stare at your phone for a while.

It’s not that you shouldn’t be tired — you’ve been through a lot today — but here are a few tips to maximize your energy levels for whatever tomorrow brings.

1. Warm Up and Cool Down
An evening bath helps you relax, and its effect of warming you up and cooling you down has been proven as a trigger for unwinding and getting a good night’s sleep. Try to find a few minutes to slip into a bath before bed.

Tip: The warming effect of a hot, milky drink could help in the same way!

2. Get Comfortable
Conventional wisdom teaches us to invest in a good pair of work boots and a good mattress — since if you’re not in one, you’ll be in the other. We’ll assume you’ve got the shoes covered, so be sure you have a good mattress. If it’s still comfortable, keep it. But if it’s old and worn out, and it’s been seven to 10 years since you bought a new one, it may be time to go mattress shopping.

3. Work it Out 
Exercise helps wear you out at night, and it also enhances circulation — sending more oxygen to your cells to help rejuvenate the body. You don’t need to go all out, either! Just find a workout that can fit into your schedule.

4. Snack Thoughtfully 
Munching on dried fruit, nuts or berries throughout the day helps you even out the highs and lows of hunger, avoiding the need for a huge dinner to compensate for not eating during the day.

5. Stay Hydrated
Water, helps deliver important nutrients around the body and supports your body’s ability to maintain its health. Fluids like juice will help keep you hydrated, too.

Although you might not have the time to get as much sleep as you’d like every night, these tips can help you stay on top of your game day in and day out. Now, go take a nap!
